Re lesschumras: I think along different lines. Kula/chumra didn’t enter into it at all. 80 – 100 years ago, these picnics and outings and socializing resulted in wonderful shidduchim and choshuve doros. It was a matter of survival – you wanted to meet someone whom you knew was as committed as you. And the men were gentlemen, with very focused goals. The world now is different. It wouldn’t work, definitely not for teenagers. That’s all I meant.
