For some reason I can’t post comments on the homepage; letters to the editor about this have not been acknowledged.
Personally, I just don’t read a lot of the stuff. I don’t know what I could gain from reading about the pakshvilim issue I just saw. And there was this heartfelt Out of the Mailbag about a tragedy in upstate NY apparently involving the haimishe community there. I didn’t have a CLUE about what happened till I read this. Perhaps there was a feeling that enough people knew that it was important to provide a framework for viewing this. I understand and see that it might have been genuinely necessary. And yet now I had to find out something I would never have known about. Sure I know vaguely about the machlokes, but why did I need to know more?
Now these particular cases are examples of stuff below the radar of AP and Reuters. I guess that for the big stuff, e.g. Madoff, there’s not much of a shaila.
