Most of the time, it is expected that resignation will follow a declined request for a raise.
I’m not saying it isn’t different in a school setting – it may be, but I definitely don’t agree that the asker has “nothing to lose”.
Stick around after being told no, and you’ve proven to the boss that you not worth more – or you’d have gone elsewhere to get it.
