Keep the secular books in the one room of the house where they belong, and you have the best of both worlds. Your children will indeed improve their vocabularies but they will also understand where these books and the values they teach belong. Ditto for news magazines. I am multilingual and until the Internet came along and I stopped buying international periodicals I had a whole European newsstand in that porcelainated chamber.
