Based on what has been expressed online here, I think I can help answer some of your concerns — I too have researched this topic at some length; I have visited dozens of Scotch whisky distilleries and have spoken at great length with dozens of folks in the production-side of the industry, and more than I care to remember in the marketing-side too.
