Belev- any time your hands become tumei (scratch your head, touch your shoe, touch a part of your body that is supposed to be covered etc.) you are supposed to either rinse your hands or rub them on raw wood (wood absorbs).
Washing six times comes after showering, cutting your nails, washing al netilas yodoiyim, when you wake up, after using the bathroom etc.
There are people that are makpid to wash 6 times for other things- you need to ask your father/husband what you hold. (Some people also wash 8 times vs. 6)
