Type 2 is considered hereditary, and while Type 1 is not considered hereditary, there are genetic factors that make some people more pre-disposed to Type 1 diabetes than others (e.g. body weight). People with Type 2 diabetes tend to be overweight, while people with untreated Type 1 diabetes tend to be underweight. Many other differences, but many similarities as well.
