Of course poskim should be consulted before any major decisions in life, especially ones involving anaesthetic or other potentially dangerous or serious outcomes. Chassidim are noheg to ask aitzeh before even minor or seemingly trivial matters. Making our own decisions can lead to big shailos where we involve ourselves in situations where we are not even aware that there could be halachic ramifications due to our lack of knowledge.
