The “alter heim” when not romantisized was a very misserble place with extream poverty, severe chilhood illness, pograms, Haskalah, all the “isems” and most people were not able to learn a blat gamarah on their own. Yes they where more “temimos’dig”, they where simple G-d fearing erlicha yiden but the all in all, the total picture was not better then today.
