I want to know what the whole royal family’s expenses add up to per year. How many royal family members are on salary?

That’s called the Civil List. Very few Royals actually get money from the Civil List. In addition, the Queen refunds the money spent on other Royals (other than herself and the Duke of Edinburgh) to Parliament. To the best of my knowledge, the only other Royals who get civil list money are the Queen’s children, the Dukes of Kent and Gloucester and Princess Alexandra. In addition, this money doesn’t come free — they have to perform duties for the Crown.

It’s possible that Princes William and Harry also get Civil List monies (I couldn’t find out for sure one way or the other), but even if they do, the Queen reimburses Parliament for it.

The Civil List is currently fixed at 7.9m pounds, the same level it has been at for the last ten years. Keep in mind that this money doesn’t all go to Queen’s pockets. A large chunk of it goes to pay for staff associated with running the royal household. You can download a 2006 accounting of the Civil List expenditures from the Royals’ website.

In addition, keep in mind that the Civil List is going to be abolished in 2013.
