About 90 years ago the gedolim considered the question of womens’ participation in democracies. Basically, it was Rav Kook z’tz’l who said that women shouldn’t even vote, vs. Rav Uziel z’tz’l who said that l’chatchila women can hold and hold any office in a democracy — and Rav Uziel’s opinion was unanimously accepted by klal Yisrael.
