In my experience, it seems that while women prefer not to be surprised (often hinting or asking directly for what they want) most of the guys I know (including myself) would prefer to be surprised. I am of the opinion that the ideal gift should NOT be something the recipient NEEDS and definitely not something he would buy for himself. It SHOULD be something he wants and would enjoy, but would not buy. Either a keepsake (a personalized item with an engraving or picture) or a “toy” which depends on the recipient – alcohol and a nice meal were mentioned, but shouldn’t be repeated too often since a gift that remains for many uses gets more brownie points than a meal eaten only once. Some goods ideas are electronics (digital camera, flash drive, game) a tool for the handyman (be careful not to get him something he already has, or something for his desk to remind him of his family.
