It used to be that husbands would wait for their wife to light candles before going to shul (bec they already davened mincha). So the wife used to wave to shoo him out the door after she lit.
Today, husbands don’t go to shul until like 2 minutes to shekia, but the wave remains. Some think now it is to tell the kids to go away.
