Hamantashen are uniters – I’ll give you and you and you… a few, you will give back to me and to others and everybody is smiling and happy. people who were not on speaking terms are friends again.
latkes have no such ability. I have yet to see someone buy a fancy little container and decorate it nicely with ribbons and colored saran wrap and bows and stick a latke in it. when you do give someone a latke, they hand you back a dry cleaning bill to get the oil out of their new suit.
and to answer up notpashut: you are not correct. the halacha is clear on this, you can but are not obligated to start eating hamantaschen from Rosh Chodesh Adar (aleph in a leap year, although some rule beis) up until Shabbos HaGadol. one has to eat the hamantaschen without adding any post baking ingredients. Latkes, on the other hand can only be eaten on chanukah (the rest of the year they are potato pancakes) and they must be served with either applesauce or sour cream to mask the oily taste.
