I was gonna keep quiet on this thread but since no one is defending papa, I will. Notice, he never said that every child is off the derech because of their parents. He just said it is not a surprise that a child is otd if he must be afraid his parents will no longer love him upon knowing he is otd. A parents job is to show unconditional love. NO MATTER WHAT! And hey, we’re not talking about a murderer or rapist. Just a guy who for whatever reason decided yiddishkeit isn’t for him. If he is afraid that his parents will be very upset with him, he must not have been shown unconditional love. It is therefore no surprise that he is otd. It is very, very common for people who have had a difficult childhood to go off the derech.
