CF – Well you have to look at it from my point of view -First of all if you want everything to be sugar-coated, then go to one of the doctors that do this. Second of all, what do I have to lose besides the patient going elsewhere -they were discouraged before I met them and they are still discouraged. No gain or loss. By being tough, sometimes you can turn people around. Acc. to the Torah, you’re allowed to hit a kid (Some people hold not in our generation.)? Why, why not just tell them off? Because sometimes to make a point come across, you have to take desperate measures to accomplish this. I remember some of the Petch I received as a child.
Why do people seek help from medical professionals? Do they want them to pity them, like their peers and family or do they want them to maintain and keep their health? If you told the patient to do something and they aren’t listening, I believe you should try a different appproach -sometimes this might include having “tough love”! Or you can take the easy way out and just patronize the patient and say “I’m glad your trying -keep it up”. This practioner only cares about themselves and not the patient because they are doing nothing to prevent complications.
Young people with diabetes know nothing of the complications of diabetes, but I do -I’ve seen it. They lie around the corner waiting to spring. The hospitals & nursing homes are full of patients with diabetic complications. Ok, granted some are newly diagnosed, but what about the others? The answer is because their practioners didn’t put in enough effort. They took the easy out -“It’s ok, you’ll try harder next time”. Next time came and they said the same thing. This happens until the patient comes down with complications. Now it’s too late to prevent them, only to treat them. “A ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
The way a lot of these complications are treated isn’t a pretty sight! I won’t go into details here.
