It’s not a popularity contest. “Being universally popular” has nothing to do with fulfilling the criteria of Moshiach. Moshiach will unite the Jewish people, bring world peace, end world hunger, and rebuild the Beis Hamikdash. Anyone who does all that, I should think, would be recognized by everyone as Moshiach.
