Sem613 – You are correct. The attitude stems from the high school systems. Girls’ school work their students very hard, and they have to know a lot of different subjects. This teaches them a lot, plus intangibles such as time-management, responsibility, coping, etc… Also, extracurricular stuff helps girls develop maturity and responsibility. Boys’ yeshivos need to have higher standards. What good is it to know a masechta back and forth if you don’t know anything else like hashkafa, derech eretz, a rudimentary secular education, and maturity???
