I came to the recent realization that the MODS are probably regular humans, and therefore probably have regular thoughts and feelings. Which got me thinking… Who are they? What do they think when they think a poster says something stupid–do they just grit their teeth and post it. They allow a surprising amount of posts, even those which make fun of the MODS or YWN.

They know everyone’s names–do they spy on everyone; have huge ma’arachos behind their backs?

“Hey, 147. How are you? Guess who I saw in shul today. Popa Bar Aba.”

“He davens in our shul? What does he look like?”

“You know, that tall guy who’s always getting into fights with everyone.”

“Oh, him. They tried to give him g’lillah the other day and he started screaming.”

If they feel the coffee room is too boring, do they post some controversial subject under a different name? How many posters are really MODS? Sometimes I wonder if I’m the only real poster, and everyone else is a MOD in disguise. (Bishvili nivra ha’olam…)

How does the night shift work? You noticed that at all times of day, posts get posted? Do they take turns doing the night shift? Do they have MODS in Israel to do the night shift? Do the nighttime workers wonder who in their right mind is up at night posting on the YWN Coffee room? (You woke me up to say LOL? Just get a life and leave me alone. Grimace. Sigh. Allow the post.)

Are they reading this now, rolling their eyes that yet another thread is devoted to them. Or do they like it? Or do they not care one way or the other, so long as they get their paycheck? Is anyone still reading this?

And sometimes, as the thread goes on and on, you could lose track of the subject. Do they have to continuously read the same thing over and over, to see whether the latest post, which is is response to a much earlier post, is appropriate? Do they work from home or an office? Is it a side job or full time?

I’m thinking about researching the matter thoroughly. I think it’s an extremely important subjext. You think I could get a doctorate for this?

P.S. I don’t really think everyone are MODS, only a few of the main characters.

Maybe day, not night. I noticed that posts only get approved till a certain point, usually about 11:00. Then at one am, more posts are approved. Then at like 3 am, more are approved. And then not til the “real” morning 🙂

    sh0wj0e:

You don’t have to be a mod to do it – just read this:

    http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/just-testing-the-various-allowed-markups

    Mod (and audience):

    We don’t censor

    Oh? Who did this, then?

    http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/ever-seen-a-forest-animal-die-of-old-age#post-536830

[Note: My posts in that thread weren’t censored, I just thought it would be funny to stick that at the bottom. I didn’t even realize the original wasn’t in parentheses until now…]

    cozimjewish:

The mods don’t answer this kind of question. It may be a policy,

or it may be so that no one can ever pester them with questions.

Also, I haven’t seen those 3 AM post approvals. Maybe it’s only on some nights.

    Scared driver delight:

    They know everyone's names

No, they don’t. They know your e-mail address at most.

(If you send YWN [or anyone else] an e-mail from your account, that will give them your name, though. I suggest having an anonymous e-mail account or two.)

How many posters are really MODS?

I don’t think there are many mods running around.

100 and 29 came on in November of 2013, and other than 42, they are the only mods known to be currently active, so I think it’s safe to assume they were hired because they were needed.

That makes a total of 3 mods, unless the Editor also mods.

It would take some work for them to run multiple identities

to make a tumult while moderating everyone else as well.

But if they were posting under other names, why would they ever post as themselves on non-moderation topics, which they do?

(Maybe just so people would say that…)

Actually, I think 100 only posts about moderation, or if he’s addressed. Maybe 29 and 100 are the same person, and 100 is his moderation-only name, while 29 is used for conversational posting?

    Little Froggie:

    1)

I assume “Oh…” was your edited-in realization that you’d put your post up in the wrong thread? You could’ve changed the post

to a request that it be removed and then posted it again in the right thread.

    2)

Listen, I’ve known that for a long time, but the mods block virtually all posts about your former identities! I was trying to think of a way to tell you so in that thread that they would allow. Maybe they’ll let you answer cozimjewish’s question here (tell her I sent you):

When you posted it – 29

Here’s a good question for Mods

Do Mods know users by their User Name (displayed) or by their Log On (url) name.

How about altered User names? Is there a record of the old one if that was also altered?

    Here’s another edited post:

    http://theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/seminary-picks#post-537573

This post appears to disprove my theory that 29 and 100 are the same person (it could be just to maintain the illusion, but it would be going a bit far).

    SDD:

In your original post, “147” is mentioned as a mod. Actually, she’s just an ordinary user, and there’s no profile for a Mod-147.

    Little Froggie:

The answer to part of your question about names is that to begin with, the URL and displayed name are the same, so unless the displayed name is changed twice, no record is needed.

As for “42,” that being “the answer” is a reference to a series (originally) of books called The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Your request has been granted, but your name now links to your old account, which had that name as well. I’ve made a note of that (or at least attempted to) in the “changed usernames” thread so people can still keep track of you in your current account.

So, mod, will you admit that sometimes you (or rather the other mod/s) change posts instead of completely rejecting them?

Sigh… It’s time for another “make people look stupid” post:

“the mods block virtually all posts … Maybe they’ll let you answer cozimjewish’s question here

It should have been obvious that I had tried to answer, but my

post had not been approved. I’ll try again now – Those are two

separate accounts, though as far as I know they belonged to the

    same person.

    Little Froggie:

I’ve realized that your “Oh…” might have been just to make it look like your posting in the “wrong” thread was intentional, but

you might actually have posted here instead of in that thread so that at least some people wouldn’t know what you were talking about. That you haven’t also posted it in that thread makes me think you were trying to keep it private (or maybe you just specifically wanted me to know for some odd reason – such as the interest I’ve expressed in the subject in the past).

Speaking of which, I am aware of all the identities you gave initials for in a certain post, but I don’t know who the “etc.” was for. Will you give me those initials too?

The reason my last five posts aren’t together is that I wasn’t sure if they’d be approved. In fact, post #6 was blocked.

Okay, that last one was post #6, except that it used to include my idea, which was rather more dramatic (and possibly illegal).

Randomex: That was one of my questions to the Mighty Mods. Do they, for instance, know I once had a (modified) User Name “New Kid On The Block”?

Oops. I just revealed to you what one reference of etc. stands for.

(I guess I have to modify that question now for the mods – do they know now that I had such a user name)

    I wrote earlier:

“The answer to part of your question about names is that to begin with, the URL and displayed name are the same, so unless the displayed name is changed twice, no record is needed.”

    EDIT:

For the mods, anyway – I assume they can see your profile URL. For normal users, the profile URL linked to next to your posts will usually be the same as your current name.

This is why my “Changed usernames” thread exists, though it won’t help if a name is changed another time after it is recorded there, and it works only through the efforts of volunteers…

    Little Froggie:

Do you modify your own screen names? I see “New Kid On The Block” turned into – well, I can’t post it, can I – and someone has to have modified your current username.

I could see the mods doing this one to identify you for others, but you mentioned repeating “your self”).

I’m not sure what you mean. If it’s that your profile pages also differ in the matter of having a capital S or not, that’s true.

Your profile addresses are essentially as follows, though:

    Old account: theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/profile/showjoe

    New account: theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/profile/sh0wj0e

(Because YWN URLs are not case-sensitive, you don’t need to type a capital S to see the profile named “Showjoe,” even though that

is how the link appears next to your old account’s posts.)
