The boy told the medical crew that the firecracker went off during an attempt to increase its force.

    .

In other Purim news, on Monday a serrated plastic wheel from a gragger that was handed out to children in a nursery school seriously endangered three-year-old Ayala Levy, who was saved by a gastroscopy under general anesthesia at Kaplan Medical Center in Rechovot, Israel.

Dr. Michal Corey, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Kaplan, said Ayala arrived vomiting and complaining of pain in her neck and throat. She underwent imaging, and the piece of plastic was found stuck in her esophagus and preventing the entrance of food.

Under general anesthesia in the operating room, the child underwent a gastroscopy, in which an optic fiber is introduced into the body to view inside. Corey managed to pull the two-centimeter plastic disk out without having to perform a major operation. An hour later, the child was able to speak, walk, eat and run.

Child safety experts note that toys that have parts as small as a penny should not be within the reach of children under age four.

Kids should NEVER be allowed to play with fireworks. Thanks for the reminder.

(Hey, we finally agree on a post! I guess Adar really brings about v’nahapoch hu)

    #1062394

why does it say 2 posts if im the only one

I have figured out the reason for this occurrence. When a new topic gets started, it is shown to the mods under 2 categories. Posts for Moderation and Topics for Moderation. If we accept it initially under the ‘Topics for Moderation’ it goes up straight away, saying 1 post. However, since we are more often than not in the section ‘Posts for Moderation’ a moderator will approve it when approving others. This does not yet put it on the site, as the moderator will still need to give the approval under ‘Topics for Moderation’ Since it has been approved twice, it lists it as two posts.

This is also why it WILL take longer for a new topic to start versus a standard reply in an existing topic.

    Hope this provides clarity,

    YW Moderator-39

It was with hashgacha pratis that the child ingested the toy (through the esophagus as opposed to inhaling it (down the trachea).

    Aren’t those things illegal anyway?

Cap guns are all we have where I come from and those burst your ear drums.

where do you come from? cause here one kid goes to chinatown and buys a ton of illegal stuff and then resells it in school.

    #1062403

Fireworks are very dangerous and noisy. The fact that people have been seriously hurt using them is enough of a deterrent. The Rabbis in a strong statement need to discourage purchasing them. All you need is the wrong boy to use them. Firecrackers I think are made from Gunpowder making them a sakana. As a side note the use of Cap Guns during the reading of the Magilla is very irritating and annoying. Again firecrackers are made (I think) from an explosive. If we are responsible for each other why encourage purchasing and using them during Purim.

There are also the problems of chovel bachaveiro and bal tashchis d’gufo as a result of the potentially permanent damage inflicted on people’s hearing.

tank, I agree that it is absolutely ridiculous the noise emanating from these various devices used during megila leining.

hatzolah in israel has come out with posters on the dangers of firecrackers and prizes for children that do not use them for the month of adar. the ad must be signed by the parents. if i’m not mistaken these posters were printed in the religous papers so people all over will see them.it was presented in a very beautiful but serious manner. we heard on the israeli news last night a boy had his fingers burned badly from the use of firecrackers. we should all have a happy and safe purim.

david s. why are firecrackers assur dioraysa? they are extremely dangerous to kids, but i dont see how that makes them an issur dioraysa.

pikuach nefesh for children, they should preserve their bodies, endangering themselves is against that

flatbush27 read this, copied from the URL: http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/factsheets/fworks.htm

    How big is the problem?

In 2006, eleven people died and an estimated 9,200 were treated in emergency departments for fireworks-related injuries in the United States.1

An estimated 5% of fireworks-related injuries treated in emergency departments required hospitalization.1

Who is most at risk for fireworks-related injuries?

More than two-thirds of all fireworks-related injuries in 2006 occurred between June 16 and July 16. During that time period:

    one out of every three people injured were children under 15 years of age;

about three times as many males were injured as females; and

young people under twenty sustained nearly half (47%) of all injuries from fireworks.1

People actively participating in fireworks-related activities are more frequently and severely injured than bystanders.2

    What kinds of injuries occur?

    Between June 16 and July 16, 2006:

The body parts most often injured were hands (2,300 injuries), eyes (1,500 injuries), and the head, face, and ear (1,400 injuries).1

More than half of the injuries were burns. Burns were the most common injury to all body parts except the eyes and head areas, where contusions, lacerations and foreign bodies in the eye occurred more frequently.1

Fireworks can be associated with blindness, third degree burns, and permanent scarring.2

Fireworks can also cause life-threatening residential and motor vehicle fires.1

What types of fireworks are associated with most injuries?

    Between June 16 and July 16, 2006:

Firecrackers were associated with the greatest number of estimated injuries at 1,300. There were 1,000 injuries associated with sparklers and 800 associated with rockets.1

Sparklers accounted for one-third of the injuries to children less than 5 years of age.1

David, more kids probably die from lead poisoning than from firecrackers. come on! if that were the case it would be assur to drive or even cross the street (with the light)

definitely more people die from that than from firecrackers.

david s. i agree with you by children. why is it assur if a mature adult does them in a safe open area

still people don’t lauch firecrackers every day do they moish? if you multiply the firework casualties by 363, it will surely be more casualties than driving, that happens every day!

    #1062419

i highly doubt that david. car accident casualties will be much more than firework casualties even if ppl did it everyday.

we’re not comparing here. torah and halacha are emes without comparing anything, right? so safe is safe and unsafe is unsafe. regardless of statistics.

😉 i love getting all frum on everyone around here

This is the old argument over why people make a fuss about owning a gun when more children each year die from swimming pool accidents. Freakanomics author postulates that it is the shock value of the type accident that drives the issue and not the numbers. Same for firecrackers.

squeak, i hear what david’s saying. but according to his logic, anything that’s unsafe should be assur. including dunkin donuts.

moish you didn’t need to say that part in the end, I already understood it from the post ;>|), but it seems a bit self-contradictory, considering your previous post lol

There is also the risk vs, reward factor.

no, i did not contradict myself. i was just using that as an example.

IF _____ and ______ are assur because of XXX

THEN if _____ and ______ have XXX they must be assur too.

simple logic. doesn’t work, though so i guess you’re wrong.

(1.) Regarding sakanas nefashos: driving, unlike firecrackers, is something that dosh bei rabbim.

(2.) There is a high risk of non-lethal injury, which brings up the issurim of chovel bachaveiro and bal tashchis d’gufo.

(3.) Pikuach nefesh and external damage aren’t the only factors here. Firecrackers cause hearing damage that can become permanent depending on the level of exposure. (Often people don’t even realize that their hearing is damaged until they take a hearing test. Or they might notice that they need to turn up the volume on the shiurim they listen to, or that they are more frequently asking people to speak up). In the unlikely scenario that the only person whose hearing is affected is the person making the noise, it is still assur because of bal tashchis d’gufo.

TJ, that doesn’t contradict the point i was making to David, but honestly – who asked you?? 😉 jk – i purposely didn’t say any of those things… i wanted to avoid the direct problem…

Good post, TJ. I once heard that the Rabbonim did want to assur driving, but my brother challenged me on this and I couldn’t find an actual mekor for it. I did hear that tackle football and skydiving are assur, but as always, ask your LOR. I remember playing touch football on friday with some Yeshiva chevra, which is muttar according to everybody, and some kid got sandwiched by some “rough touch” types and suffered a bruised kidney, which he discovered hours later. Some other guys used to play tackle, and it seemed like every week someone else broke a finger.

yeah well we only play tackle in the winter when everyone’s wearing big puffy jackets. and yeah we end up with a few broken bones. (usually fingers and noses, but of course i had to be the one with the leg injury)

looks like it’s the end of our tackle season – today we played touch – the weather was too nice.

kapusta, if i ever do daf yomi i doubt it’ll be on here.
