Based on these opinions, and our contemporary knowledge of mental illness and suicide, I wouldn’t think a suicide is treated like someone worthy of being buried in a “special section.” That section of the cemetery was historically for people with tattoos, people who are mechallelei shabbat, etc.

That’s what we do here in this small city in Ohio.
I’ve been told that the Rabbis will find any and every excuse possible to avoid burying a family member outside of the normal cemetery to avoid further pain and embarrassment.
And that it is actually not practiced today unless absolutely necessary. (although I don’t think it would ever happen here)
From what I understand, what is considered suicide by modern standards is seen as death from mental disease, not the same suicide as the Torah forbids. (Not saying that suicide is allowed, of course.)
But don’t quote me on this. I’m not a rabbi (or a rabbit :P).
I believe that we bury them in the regular part, since we assume that the person regretted his/hers action by the time it was to late to stop.
People are never buried in cemetaries.
It is incredibly unlikely to ever find someone that we Halachically consider a M’abed Atzmo L’da’as.
It is clear, at least to me, that anyone who would take such am awful and drastic step, is obviously suffering from extreme depression and is emotionally ill. To feel such isolation and despair that one could end his life, surely must be the result of some type of breakdown, IMO.
To those saying that anyone who kills themselves is inherently ill, please realize that there are Halachos about a M’abed Atzmo L’da’as for a reason. It can exist. It might be incredibly rare, but saying it is impossible is denying these Halachos.
In Rome, there was an acceptable form of suicide known as a “virtuous death.” When one committed suicide with logical reasoning, it was considered honorable in their society. Under these or similar circumstances, it’s easier to see why such a suicide could be Assur.
