Please help me with emuna. I want to have complete emuna, but it is much easier to see my life with emuna than understand how it works for others.

For example… How does emuna work when someone dies as a victim of a horrible death (lo aleinu and chas v’shalom for anyone)?

    Emuna says:

    1) Everything is from Hashem. Ain Od Milavdo.
    2) Everything is for our best.
    3) Everything is a blessing, even if it doesn’t appear that way.

But let’s say someone is killed or brutally attacked or leaves one with permanent suffering, that is also always for one’s best? Or did the person complete his or her mission in life? Or maybe the person will reincarnate?

I can go back in my life, and with emuna, see how everything was good for me, and helped me become a better person. Yet I don’t know if I can say that something terrible that happens to someone else had to have happened that way. Also, I’ve survived things that others did not, or others are still there and they didn’t have the same opportunities. I know that I am lucky and blessed.

There are good people who deserve good things but weren’t born with or didn’t have the same advantages. So what does that mean? Hashem wanted it that way?

Some people fall victim to crimes and oppression and it wasn’t their fault but it’s still all good from Hashem for these people’s best?

I’ve been reading *The Garden of Emuna* by Rabbi Arush, shlit”a and Rabbi Brody shlit”a, and I really want to be fearless and just rely on Hashem.

    Thank you 💖

I heard a great vort that can be related here as well imho.
The mishnah says “hevey dan es kol haadam l’kaf zechus” which translates to “you should judge all man favourably.”
The question is why does it say haadam “the” man it seems extra?

The beautiful answer is that you should read it as “if you judge the [whole] man it will be favourably.
Meaning…if you saw the WHOLE “person” ( as in his “pekeleh” / life story / motivations etc… ) it would be CLEAR why you shouldn’t judge him.
(It’s much better in hebrew but I can’t type it…sorry)
I think you could apply a similar hashkafah here because we can’t see the full picture by anyone or ourselves but if we did…

OP, I went through the thinking that you are saying you are in. I also was a student of Rav Shalom Arush for 3 years, so I know his teachings rather well.
The issue is that you are trying to figure out how things can be good. However, emunah is for when you CAN’T figure out how things are good.

In other words, if you were to “know” how things were good, then that is knowledge. However, if you were to “believe” that things were good, then that is emunah.

By the way, as I mentioned, I know Rav Arush & his shita very well. And he constantly says that the only way to achieve emunah is through talking/praying/hitbodedut to H-shem every day. It’s not an option if you really want deep emunah…and trust me, he is someone that has amazing emunah. He does NOT have an easy life at all; he still goes through all the situations that normal people go through. But he always has a true smile no matter what happens & he has many miracles happen for him because of his emunah.

Either way, your questions are quite normal for anyone starting off in their journey of finding/understanding emunah. Also, I should add that I heard a huge tzaddik in Jerusalem saying that this generation is only “payback”. He said that all the problems one experiences in this life are just payback from previous generations so that a person doesn’t have to pay the price in the world to come. For instance, if someone steals from someone, then he was only stolen from because it’s mida k’neged mida & in this way, it is a benefit for the one that has been stolen from, since he doesn’t have to worry about the punishment later on.

    I hope this all helps.

If you can see your life with emuna, then you have already reached a high level. Very impressive.
I think what you are saying is that when you can understand things, it is easy to have emuna (ie retroactively in your own life) but when you don’t understand things (ie others’ lives) it is hard.
The point is to accept that we can’t possibly fathom Hashem’s ways (even when we think we do) but still we need to believe that everything He does is for our best.
A great (and famous) mashal I heard from R’ Leff many years ago- imagine looking thru a peephole at a surgery in process, not knowing what it was all about. You would see a strangely dressed and masked person, surrounded by others, brandishing sharp weapons and attacking a helpless, sedated person who cannot defend himself. But no, actually the masked man is helping the sick person, the “bad” cuts and “attacks” are meant to cure.
Only when we humble ourselves, and acknowledge that we cannot understand everything, then we can grow in emuna.

But if we saw the whole picture then it’ll make perfect sense that someone died in a gruesome murder?

…I can see how that would fit into Hashem’s bigger picture for humanity. However, on an individual level, I don’t know. How can one say that it was for this one person’s best? Why can it not be a tragic thing?

By the way, lightbrite, don’t worry about trying to accept everything with emuna all at once. But rather accept little things with emuna…most people get confused (I know I did), but many of the teachings in Rav Arush’s books are on a very high level & it’s not expected of a person to instantly be on those levels. Instead, it’s an overview of what emunah is & what can be achieved & what should be aimed for. However, a person has to work many years in order to achieve true emunah accepting that everything in life is for the best.

People can fake emunah, but Rav Shalom told me that the way you know you have true emunah is when you can get on a buses without any money & each time you have a miracle happen for you: such as someone bumps into you & remembers they owe you money, etc…each time, every time you get on the bus…and yes, I’ve personally witnessed Rav Arush walking out his door to go on a trip & someone was walking up to his house at the same time to gave him a few hundred shekels in tzedakah…another story was that I needed money for a bus ticket to Meron & I asked him if he had any money that I could use to buy a ticket. He told me to wait one minute & there was a hand that came out of the crowd that was gathered around him & the hand gave him a bunch of money. The Rav then gave the money to me & it was the exact amount for my ticket…I still laugh at how absurd it was that it was the exact amount I needed & how the hand just came out of the crowd. I’m laughing right now just thinking about it.

While this is a wonderful place to discuss emuna, questions on emuna would be better answered in person or by phone by someone who is trained and knowledgable on the subject and how to teach it to others. There are mentors available through partners in torah and other organizations for this purpose.
