I noticed that since the CR opened, there has been hardly any comments any more on the news stories. Did you notice?
I did not notice and neither did the other Moderators
there are lots of news posts, however, people usually only post if they have strong feelings. Most news stories elicit one of these reactions: “How nice” “how sad” “interesting!” ,etc. MOST of which do not inspire further discussion. However, as in the Mumbai situation last week, there were many, many posts of info and feelings.
But you’re right that there’s less overall, since people need/want a place to vent/argue/emphasise. They used to use news items as springboards; now they start a new thread!
Its easier and more comfortable to discuss something unimportant, like who is the YWN moderator, bash people who dont hold to the same standards as you (chalv stam thread), whine on and on about a shidduch crisis and many other ridiculous topics then it is to deal with real life issues.
Look at the readers write section of a popular yeshivishe paper. The same inane topics get rehashed again and again. Very little substance, lots of nonsense.

i dug this out from noitallmr’s profile! this thread is 8 months old, yet now more then ever i see that on the homepage barely any CR Members leave comments!
why do you thing, Everyone has Stopped Commenting on the homepage Because of The CR?!
For some reason my comments haven’t been appearing on the homepage. I don’t think I’m THAT incendiary and controversial.
Jax, I used to check the news first and then come to the CR. Now I go straight to the CR and check the homepage only when MAJOR crisis occurs! I get the news emailed to me so it pops up in the corner of the screen, I read the headline, and see if it interests me. Otherwise, the CR is where I stay!

personally, I happen to think that the comments in alot of cases detract from the news part of the site. In the coffee room, it’s just that- a coffee room and everyone expects everyone to share their opinions, thoughts…
but when you come on to check the news, and one comments “oh, how nice…” “wow. so they are now being ‘nice’ to everyone…” and then the next commenter: “#1, how could you say such a thing!! Don’t you know…” “That Rav should have…”
I don’t think these comments enhance at all.
just make sure to keep him VERY busy so he has no time to check this thread!
