mytake and observeteen: i really like both books, when used to understand myself and others, but no they do not explain everything, but do give words and means to explain different aspects of people. and mytake, i too read the original ones and found them interesting.

…You asked if I enojoyed the books (in that machmir on looks thread)- I did, even though I am a bit critical of these personality typing systems, I still love that feeling of reading my “type’s” description, and wondering “how does s/he know how I think or what gets me frustrated/angry/embarassed/annoyed etc.???”

Even though it’s oversimplified (IMHO, anyway), the Myers & Briggs system is quite discerning…I actually felt like someone was INTRUDING on me when I read about INFP the first time. I was like, “What are YOU doing in my head?! Hey, this is ME, you can’t just steal my individuality and dump me into a cataogry together with 5% of the population out there!”

I really hate labels. INFP is a label, although the point is to give you self-awareness, and to help others understand you better.

But I like being me. Not a “type”. Whatever…

    Whaddya think?

i find the myers-briggs very helpful for shidduchim – both for person to help understand themself and what they need and for the terminology to explain to others what the person is looking for.

the enneagram is really good for when i want to understand someone who is so different than me – i can better understand their needs and what drives them.

I can check the book later for ya…or if you’d like to read it yourself, it’s the “Mating” section of “Please Understand Me.”

Its quite interesting to see what some of the posters in the CR are in the Meyers Briggs. I happen to find the whole personality thing fascinating. I dont like putting people in boxes, but the truth is, the “boxes” here are very big, since everyone is unique.

This -and the enneagram, definitely helps me understand where people are coming from, their motivations and helps me understand their point of view and they behave the way they do. Great tool for Dan Lekaf Zechus! And in Shidduchim, I found it helps as well. In fact there is a book that I borrowed from my friend thats called-“Just Your Type” which goes through all the type combinations and says the pros and cons in a marriage with that specific combination.

Has it been statistically proven that couples who complement one another according to the test and rating system, have happier marriages?

I did some googling and find that in some areas opposites work better, in some areas similarites. (Two Judgers or 2 Perceivers dont work well together…)

    #920527

Thanks for introducing this topic- its interesting and very much my style.

I took the test and found I’m an INTJ.

If I know my husband well enough and answered the questions correctly for him, I believe he is an ESFJ… after reading the description on each type I realized opposites really do attract 😉

For all those wondering what each type’s description is, you can use this link:

    http://www.myersbriggs.org/my-mbti-personality-type/mbti-basics/the-16-mbti-types.asp#INTJ

    of course

I’d say it’s not a rule. I find that in some areas I work better with people who think similarly to me, and in others, differences can complement each other very well…

spoiled: no set rule. but from that info. can ask yourself questions.

how N are you? and are you extreme F or do you also have a lot of T?

do you need someone to understand you? or do you davka want someone who is more grounded and not so complex (just a sweet, nice guy)?

are you very, very J and would like someone more spontaneous and easy-going to balance you out? or are you borderline J/P and would go crazy with extreme P?

what kind of people are you more attracted to – someone who is more similar to you, who gets energy from one on one conversations or would you like to be around someone who enjoys tons of people and having tons of guests for shabbos, etc.?

There are no right or wrong answers. Different people have different needs. i just find it really helps by asking these crucial questions – can think about who really are and what truly need.

For me, the biggest question would be the N issue: i’ve seen some people who truly need another N to understand them, and others who will fulfill that emotional need with their friends and want an S to keep them grounded.

The F for a girl usually will marry a T boy, but depending on you how much F you need the guy to have. since most girls are F and most boys are T, this is generally where you get men are from mars, women are from venus issues. which is also where the opposites (male and females) attract.

I read the Adahan book a while ago (12+ years ago), and I was not impressed. She is clearly an NF and her pro-NF bias comes out.

    I’m ENTP.

mytake: It didn’t bother me that I am “labeled”. I mean, after all, there ARE similar personality types out there. I found it pretty interesting. You’re right that she kinda simplifies ppl, but it didn’t bother me.

I never read the book “Please Understand Me”, so I’m quite unfamiliar with the letters (although my mom told me what they stand for). Just wondering, what #s do you have (from Miriam Adahan’s book)? I’m a 7,4,2,3,5.

As a psychologist in training, I studied psychometrics. Myers-Briggs, especially the tests taken online, should be taken only with a grain of salt.

You mean from the Enneagram System? (Awareness?)

If I remember correctly I was a 1,2,4,6. But I saw parts of me in all of em. Anyways, I found the system to be poorly developed (doesn’t compare to Myers Briggs System).

I – introvert (gets energy from one on one conversations) vs. E – extrovert (gets energy from being surrounded by tons of people) ex. extrovert will go to library to study, hoping that there are people there who can talk to and study with. introvert can have a lot of friends, but will enjoy more intimate, one-on-one talks.

N – deeper type of personality/ can be more in clouds/ in one’s mind and/or emotions. if they are NF – deeply emotional type. if NT – absentminded professor type and/or more lomdeish type – likes to go deeply into intellectual topic

vs. S – sensory: very aware and in touch with their senses. they’re down to earth; notice what people are wearing, what they look like, 75% of population are S’s. they’re aware of world around them and interact with world through their senses (sorry, it’s hard for me to explain S cuz i have almost no S in me).

T – make decisions based on logic vs. F – make decisions based on emotions (most males are T and most females are F, but doesn’t always have to be so)

P – spontaneous/ easy-going/ hard time making decisions/ go with the flow/ will do things at last minute

vs. J – organized/ make decisions easily/ structured/ will be on time to places

this is just brief summary. most people are not 100% one thing. can be 50%/50% or both T and F, but little stronger T. basically can be more balanced between both or more extreme in one vs. the other.

as with all things – there is no right or wrong. you can use this info. to understand yourself and if, you want, to balance yourself out – can learn how to do more of other thing, if you want to. or can help you find job you would like by doing things within your personality or by challenging yourself, and doing things that stretch your nature.

by the way, i understand the numbers differently than what miriam adahan wrote. my understanding from the book on enneagram that i own is that you’re basically one number with a wing of one of the numbers next to you. so a 4 can have a 3 or a 5 wing; a 9 – an 8 or 1 wing.

also, if want to work on yourself different numbers have to go in different directions. i can’t remember it all off hand, but 4 has to go to 1, 7 to 5, 2 to 4,…

    INTP and proud of it!

By the way, about the “where did my individuality go” thing- even fingerprints (the typical “we are all unique” example) can be sorted into four pattern categories.

MBTI types are patterns of behavior, not a “box.”

Many years ago I had a job I absolutely hated – it was not a good fit for me at all. I had to work very hard to psych myself to go and to get through each day.

The boss had us fill out the Myers-Briggs for ourselves and for each other. It was pretty eye-opening for me – they had me pegged as a super-outgoing type (I don’t remember the letters) and I mostly just wanted to hide in a closet all the time. They literally looked at me like they thought I was nuts. I guess I was trying too hard…??

im a ENFP!! but i got annoyed from the book cuz im very in the middle of most of the letters. like i can be an n but also a s like the same amount!! it was annoying but i think i got myself straight….i love these types of things. the 9 personality type though got me really confused and i decided that im not a single one of them!! lol

    tzippi and mytake:

Her book about this was called “Appreciating People”.

The book based on the Enneagram was called “Awareness”.

I found the 2nd book way easier to follow, and it really helps you understand yourself and others—in a positive way.

INTP — from a real test, not an online one. The “N”, the “T”, and the “P” are really strong, the “I” much less so.

I think most people who post online are INFP, INTJ or INTP.

ENFJs come for the laughs when they’re feeling introverted.

INFJs’ feelings get hurt and then they leave.

S’s are bored after a while.

    ENTJs are too busy.

stuffed cabbage: that’s good that you fall in the middle on most things – means you’re pretty balanced and not too extreme. sometimes, if one is too much one thing, they need to balance themselves out a bit.

psacha – i agree that an ES would not be in the CR, usually, cuz too busy. but all other types can come in for different reasons, though they will choose to type on different threads or alternatively, different threads will bring out different aspects of them.

i don’t believe everyone in the CR is an N; but definitely, a higher proportion are N’s here than in the “real world”.

(nailpolish thread is NOT an “N” type thread. 🙂

E is more common than I

S is more common than N

F is more common among females.

T is more common among males.

P and J are about 50/50 in the population.

The only book I read on the topic is, “the cult of personality”.

There are two types of people:

    • Rich and poor
    • Smart and dumb
    • Introvert and extrovert
    • Skinny and fat

My point is that if you fold a paper in two, every part of the paper falls into one of the two categories. If you fold it in eight, everyone falls into one of the eight categories. If you don’t fold it, it is just one paper. A specific point on the page doesn’t move based on how you fold it — it is just as unique when the page is folded to it’s maximum as when it is flat.

Everything can be classified, but it doesn’t mean that the classification actually narrows down the object to be defined by the classification. There can be multiple, parallel breakdowns of the object.
