REb moshe said that norelco is good because it cuts like a scissor people now say that he wouldnt have said it with lift and cut, but really nothing changes lift and cut just gives a closer shave but the mechanics of it is the same it still cuts like a scissor so i don’t see why they say he would asser it, adiraba if someone can give a good reason i’m open to it

    “Kosher” shavers? Are they edible?

Actually I know someone who asked Reb Moshe about lift and cut and he said it is assur. The reason being that the upper blade draws the hair through the holes in the screen and the cutting blade comes in contact with the skin, just like a razor.

PM, the issue isn’t whether the blade comes in contact with the skin or not. The issue is whether the hair is cut by one blade on its own, like a razor, or whether the hair needs to be between the blade and either another blade, or the side of a hole, in order to get cut. A razor cuts on its own, without any help. If it needs to push the hair against something else to cut it, it’s like a scissors, and is ok.

pm: i doubt rav moshe would give a halachic ruling based on incorrect facts. the top blade does not come into contact with the skin whatsoever (i know this because i use lift and cut, and it is pure marketing. it cuts no closer then any other shaver!), if it did, you would get nicked. maybe he held it was assur, which even his own children do not claim, but that would not be his reason. it owuld probably be what his sons do say, that is is too close, and is therefor like a razor.

Feif Un: the blade of a Norelco is plenty sharp enough to cut without the help of any other blade, there is no scissor action involved. Therefore the remaining issue is that even a razor may be used to cut the beard at a distance from the skin.

mariner: the blade is parallel to the skin, that’s why you don’t get nicked. Too close is not a problem if there is a scissor action, and would not be a reason to forbid.

Sorry eric55, but in 1986 when Reb Moshe was niftar the Norelco Rototract was already out for a couple of years. They later changed its name to lift and cut. I clearly remember because I was in 9th grade and contemplating the purchase of my first shaver and my Rebbe called Reb Moshe to ask him. After receiving his psak I had to search high and low to find a store that still stocked the old, non-Rototract model.

eric55: though like you i dont think rav moshe gave a psak, at least for the public, regarding lift and cut, you are wrong about your reason. i thought like you, so i looked it up. turns out lift and cut came out in 1980. thats 6 years before his petirah.

PM: it was called lift and cut all along. who was your rebbe, and how can people reach him to verify?

mariner: Your right. It seems in the beginning it was called “Rotatract lift and cut” and at some point they dropped the “Rotatract”.

My Rebbe’s name is Rabbi Shmuel Zimmerman and to the best of my knowledge he currently resides in Southfield, Michigan.

Rav Blumenkrantz in his Pesach guide mentions an issue with micro-screen shavers, such as Braun and Remington, that the screen may be sharp enough to cut by itself and be considered a razor. I tested this on 2 15 year old Brauns, and neither screen would cut a thing without the blade. I don’t know if this might have been redesigned since.

That’s what my buddies do as well. It’s not a big deal & the shaver works just fine.

Anybody know about the new Remington line 3130, 4130, 5130?

    #963317

Although any shaver having the “COMFORTCUT” or “CLOSECUT” printed on the head is OK to use out of the box, PLEASE BEWARE; when purchasing REPLACEMENT HEADS for these shavers; that the words “Comfortcut” or Closecut” is printed on the replacement head as well.

    #963318

NORELCO NOW MAKES TRIPLE HEAD ROTARY SHAVERS WITHOUT LIFTS!!

The rule of thumb is: any Shaver that the outside of the head/comb it says either:

COMFORTCUT or CLOSECUT (click on for a picture) is considered “kosher” out of the box!

We recommend the Norelco 6945XL model shaver, as the best Norelco “Kosher Shaver” available on the market as of this posting.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING THE NEW “KOSHER” NORELCO SHAVERS: Although any shaver having the “COMFORTCUT” or “CLOSECUT” printed on the head is OK to use out of the box, PLEASE BEWARE; when purchasing REPLACEMENT HEADS for these shavers; that the words “Comfortcut” or Closecut” is printed on the replacement head as well.

    (Previous Update from FEB. 2011 / ADAR I 5771)

Rav Dovid is of the opinion NOT to use any other shaver, including the Remington rotary shavers & the Braun Microscreen (foil) shavers.

Rav Belsky is opinion NOT to use any other shaver, including the Remington microscreen (foil) & the Braun Microscreen (foil) shavers.

R’ Abadi holds that any electric shaver is fine because it can’t really cut at skin level because if it did you would get nicked. I don’t know if that’s true or not but it makes sense.

I once heard from a respected Posek: All shavers are completely Muttar and all are an Issur D’Oraisa. It just depends on how hard you push it.

I once hard from another respected Posek, B’sheim R’ Shlomo Zalman Auerbach: If after shaving you feel your face against the grain and can feel your hair then it’s okay.

I find all of these Shittos quite interesting, actually.

I know many who hold le ma’aseh like Rav Abadi. It does make sense (as does R’ Abadi in general).

Let’s be glad nobody is offering the limud zechut of the Malki be Kodesh on use of the t-razor nowadays.

Does anyone know where I can find out about kosher shavers in 2017? (I’m not asking for a psak, I’m looking for somewhere to get a psak)

I use a wahl hair clipper to shave off my beard.
It works nearly as good as a shaver for the purpose.

since EVERYONE uses it for haircutting.
I figure its got to be kosher to cut your beard with it.

“since EVERYONE uses it for hair-cutting.

I believe that assumption is mistaken. There is no issur to shave your head other than the peios.
In other words you can use a razor blade “for hair-cutting” but not for beard/peios. Just because it is used for hair-cutting doesnt mean you can cut a beard with it

Hair clippers are specialized implements used to cut human head hair. They work on the same principle as scissors (wikipedia)

Try the Norelco One Blade – works like a trimmer but gets you a close and quick shave.

Ubiquitin wasn’t arguing with the fact that using hair clippers is a halachically acceptable way to shave one’s face.

He was arguing with the logic of “since EVERYONE uses it for haircutting.
I figure its got to be kosher to cut your beard with it.”

“Hair clippers are specialized implements used to cut human head hair. They work on the same principle as scissors (wikipedia)”

Im not sure if that was a response to me.

I do not know how they work and did not comment way way or the other regarding what they are considered ie scissors vs razor. I have no idea. I assume wikipedia is probabaly correct.

I was just commenting that “since EVERYONE uses it for hair-cutting. I figure its got to be kosher to cut your beard with it” Isnt accurate. although your conclusion may be correct
