Please feel free to discuss your emotional experiences with instruments and music in general. In my extremely humble opinion, instrumental music can evoke emotive responses infinitely stronger than any other medium. I wonder if your opinion is the same.

Leider..: well i also play guitar- the trick is that once your fingers get all hard and plasticky..(Ya, i know it’s disguiting)- you don’t feel them anymore so it doesn’t hurt anymore!!!! :o) :o)
i play the casio!!! we should have a cr band!!! IMHO i sing great also!!! i would say i’m musical too!!!
Leider – Great thread idea! I play classical guitar. Acoustic wasn’t as much fun because of the calluses. Though, once you’ve grown nice, thick callusses, you’re a pro! I took lessons for a few years with a well known, master guitarist. Learned chords and great finger picking! Haven’t been on top of all the practicing:(

In music or Judaica stores you can probably find these great Israeli guitar instruction books called “Guitara Chasidit” by Avi and Shai Barak. The songs are well known singers’ music written in notes as well as charts, which you don’t need to read notes for. There are a few volumes and we enjoyed them alot!

I always loved music. I was actually classically trained since I was really little. I play many different instruments. A few years ago, I started playing Hebrew music for my own enjoyment and I find it very uplifting.
LeiderLeider… Have you tried guitar picks? They can be a little awkward to use but you get used to them after a while. If you do not wish to use guitar picks, just keep practicing with your fingers. Eventually your fingertips will callous and you will not feel a thing… Also, what kind of guitar strings does your guitar have. It is a lot more painful to use metal strings (as opposed to nylon). They also have slightly different tones…
I play piano and guitar, both by ear, though I was trained in piano as a young child. I gave up the lessons when my teacher realized I was not playing from the book, but rather playing back what I had heard her play. Sometimes I wish I ahd gone further, but I manage to play pretty well without the training. I taught myself guitar about 30 years ago or so. I play to relax, and enjoy singing along.
Lieder I took guitar for a lil, but my fingers stopped hurting after like a month. I only have a problem when I get my nails done I don’t play so afterwards they always hurt again.
Agree with you that there’s something so special bout guitar, I had taken casio for a yr but then I became obsessed with R’ Carlbachs music so I took guitar! gawgess!
myshadow, Rabbi Carlebach’s music sounds really nice on the piano. You should try playing around on the piano instead of the casio when you play slow, Carlebach music. You are able to express yourself a lot more on the keys of a piano keyboard than on an electric one… There are also many Carlbach pieces that sound great on the flute…
ygirl, possibly but I like the way it sounds on acoustic guitar like the raw way he played it. More pure. but thanx lol i’m not that talented!

myshadow, I definitely know what you mean about the guitar. It does sound more pure. The advantage of using a piano is the fact that you can harmonize and play the melody at the same time. (You can have more than one melody at the same time and it can sound really good… You cannot do that on any other instrument…) I love how each instrument can add something completely different to the music.
The first instrument I learned to play was the piano. I took a couple of lessons in other instruments to get a little more variety. i can now play piano, flute, guitar, saxaphone, and harmonica. I don’t know what I would do without my music…

I would love to start a band for teenagers and kids one day. I always wanted frum people to play with when I was in school. I used to play in mini orchestras but they were not Jewish. I think that frum people can really benefit from a band or orchestra!
Does any one in the CR play drums? my questions is if i have an ear for music does it make playing drums easier? I play the Keyboard & piano, & always dreamed of playing drums too.

Um actually I play drums and yes of course it’s easier if you have an ear for music, makes it much easier to follow the rythm and to do the right fill-ins. You need muscles too 😉

Debby-pay no attention to noitallmr! He is what his screenname says… just a ‘noitall!!’ I play the sax and when people find out, they think it is strange. I have gotten comments like: “It’s not appropriate for a girl to play a masculine instrument…” “Are you just trying to prove that you can do anything that boys do?…”
THe reality is, music is music. If you feel you want to express yourself using any specific instrument, you should be able to without people commenting…

I have “drummergirl” friends. They DO exist, contrary to popular and clueless masculine belief! My sister also plays drums and has performed for High School Productions.
Occasionally, as I wait for a train, I’m transfixed on subway platfroms, listening to African hand drum ensembles and perfromers. There’s something soulful and powerful about hand drum beats. No?

LeiderLeider: I didn’t realize that you hadn’t understood my post. Sorry. Yes, I arrived at a cappella by subtracting musical instruments from music. I’m sorry, but that’s just how the left side of my brain operates. Of course I understood that the dash was supposed to be a dash (as in Le-a) but I couldn’t help but notice the equation.
Between your mathematical shortcomings and my own mathematical shortcomings, I am sure that we can be friends! I am no professor of mathematics, just someone with an underdeveloped right side of the brain (hence my tendency to view everything with the left side).
I am interested in learning an instrument, particularly a wind instrument, and I don’t want to spend too much. Any suggestions?

Try the flute. A student flute on ebay will cost you about 125 dollars. Make sure you look into the company, though… If you see one that you like you can post the comapny here and I could tell you what I know about it…
You can also try the clarinet. They are slightly more expensive than flutes but if you get a student version and you check ebay you may be able to get a good deal.
Also, you can always rent an instrument for a few months to see if you will like it before you spend the real money…
