A Judge in Tennessee, Child Support Magistrate Lu Ann Ballew made the parents who named their son messiah change his name to Martin because messiah is a name reserved for one person only, yushka. The mother said they will appeal.

It’s right up there with King (which to me is a dog name). Several years ago, I had a student whose name was spelled something like Masia, but it was pronounced messiah.
August 12, 2013 5:44 pm at 5:44 pm #972833rebdonielMemberFunny, because I’ve heard of Bukharians and other Mizrachim use Mashiach as a name for their boys. And, le havdil, Greeks often use the name Christos for their boys (both loosely mean “anointed one.”)
August 12, 2013 5:59 pm at 5:59 pm #972834Chochom-ibberParticipantDidnt Obama add on to his name; Messiah? Feds overrule the States.
August 12, 2013 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm #972835just my hapenceParticipantHe’s not the messiah, he’s a very naughty boy!
August 13, 2013 8:56 pm at 8:56 pm #972836eclipseMemberChild Support and Messiah are connected?! Maybe because some of us will only be supported properly when Moshiach comes?:):)
August 14, 2013 12:09 am at 12:09 am #972837Oh Shreck!ParticipantEclpise, When Mashiach comes, there won’t be a need for child support. People, I suppose will be ‘mentchen’, former squabbles (putting it mildly) will be behind us. After a double Nechamah (???? ???? ???) which will prevail the Geulah, all former feelings of pain, bitterness, anger, resentment will vanish.
Besides, I thought we will not need ANY financial support…
August 14, 2013 1:10 am at 1:10 am #972838eclipseMemberOh Shreck – Truth is, Hashem has been supporting us all along, and Hashem is a pleasure to deal with!! (k’vyochol)
August 14, 2013 1:39 am at 1:39 am #972839sharpMemberI think I have heard of Sefardim using the name “Mashiach” as a surname.
August 14, 2013 2:01 am at 2:01 am #972840Sam2ParticipantI believe there was a professional Israeli athlete (tennis, maybe?) with the last name Mashiach.
August 14, 2013 2:54 am at 2:54 am #972841Sam2ParticipantJust curious, but how is this judge’s ruling in any way, shape, or form not a massive violation of the Establishment Clause?
August 14, 2013 1:05 pm at 1:05 pm #972842notasheepMemberJMH – very good!
August 14, 2013 6:24 pm at 6:24 pm #972843yehudayonaParticipantSam2: All the experts say her ruling will be overturned. She’s a magistrate, which is about as low on the judicial ladder as you can get.
September 2, 2013 1:26 pm at 1:26 pm #972844Bookworm120ParticipantTo everyone wondering about Sephardim and Bucharians with the name Mashiach, I think they use it only as a surname, not a first name.
