Does anyone know anyone with a real case of narcissistic personality disorder? Just wondering how common it is.

I am not talking about someone who is harmlessly self-centered. Although that shows a lack of middos there is a difference between benign and malignant narcissism.

I once new a guy like that but he would probably be classified as a psychopath. Self centered to an extreme, heartless to anyone who crossed him and yet highly very charming, charismatic, extremely driven and highly successful too I must add.

there really is no such thing as malignant narcissism, although there is nacissistic personality disorders. I don’t know how common it is because I work in a field where we see more people with disorders than without. It is a very sad disorder as people sabatoge their own relationships and can neither acknowledge it nor take responsibility for it. Changing them is almost impossible and I don’t know if there is any medications at all for personality disorders.

Where does one draw the line between just a bad midda and a personality disorder?

A personality disorder like NPD is just another way of saying someone is a bad person. NPD, psychopathy, antisocial etc. cannot be used as a defense in court. These people know that what they are doing is wrong, yet they do it anyway. But then there are normal people who have bad middos, but who don’t allow those bad middos to take over their lives. A personality disorder only means that someone has an established history of certain behaviors.

Anyway, I guess most people here were lucky enough not to cross paths with a malignant narcissist.

(Yes, I saw you said there is no such thing, Syag, but it’s a term that is used and understood as meaning “really bad” narcissism, so I am taking the liberty to use it as well.)

Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton. Fair and balanced, and I don’t trust Fox “News.”

I would have mentioned Donald Trump, but I didn’t want to give an unbalanced answer.

Whilst I accept that I am not an authority on these matters, it does seem that we are far too quick to ascribe labels to what could simply be referred to as positive or negative personality traits.
