I am not very happy with the state of Shabbos Hagadol Derashos. They completely miss the point. In my personal experience, the Shabbos Hagadol derashah is either another Shabbos Shuva derashah (like mussar and hashkafah we can get from Pesach), or one halachic topic learned be’iyun. But that’s not the point of the derashah! The derashah was instituted as a REVIEW of the halachos of Pesach (Chameitz, Seder, etc…) because there are so many of them. I have only been to one Shabbos Hagadol derashah that was legitimate and we need more! Too many baalei botim are ignorant in Hilchos Pesach and we need a yearly review!
Agree with you, where i grew up, the rabbi spoke twice, in the morning after lining when the women were in shul he went over all hilchos pesach, in the mail afternoon, men only and he spoke pilpul
