I haven’t been here for a month yet and i’m already getting sick of it (especially recycling)

    1) Its Mandatory

    2) You HAVE TO put them in WHITE garbage bags

3)You HAVE TO tie loose cardboard

4)their water is unfiltered (don’t give me that it’s cleaner because if you’ve cleaned out a cotton filter you’d find a lot of dirt after only a few days)

BTW NY was ranked #1 as the state with the least amount of freedom

and for those who are going to tell me “so move back” you have $3,000 to give me so I can do that (that’s the cost to move all my stuff)

No wonder NYers aren’t there for most of the year

I throw recyclables in the regular garbage with no problem.

You can — and halachicly must if you are drinking it — get a water filter in your house.

As I said before; the city is like a zoo, its nice to visit as long as you know that you have a home (not a WIC) to go back outside the city. If you live there you feel like in a cage.

coffee, so where would you like to be? Please name some places.

back in Miami Beach, Somewhere in NJ, Baltimore MD

I throw recyclables in the regular garbage with no problem.

lucky, I was told that on the block their is a person designated to be the recycling moser

You can — and halachicly must if you are drinking it — get a water filter in your house.

I know that I’m complaining about that because an expensive one is expensive and the cheap one (the one I have with the cotton inside) is annoying and eventually adds up, when NYC can provide the filtration themselves like every other state

As I said before; the city is like a zoo, its nice to visit as long as you know that you have a home (not a WIC) to go back outside the city. If you live there you feel like in a cage.

I googled it, and I don’t see how the “restricted freedom” effects you. Unless you smoke marijuana, tobacco, or homeschool. Most of the “excessive” laws are for protection.

‘it’s an example as to how controlling this state is’

Recycling is for your own good. The environment is polluted enough.

I dont get it. Unless you own a home in nyc, renting is so much more expensive in nyc, than any of the oot areas you mentioned, you’d make up the difference in no time. No relatives are wiling to loan you the money?

May I asked what enticed you to leave your former community and make the trip to nyc?

Coffee- WHY are you here then? You knew about recycling before you moved here. You knew about the dirt, the heat, the beeping, the traffic, the ticketing, the unfriendly sour people, the always in a rush, the smelly stinky city….

I’m here cuz I was born here and never got my way outta here yet, but why would someone actually move to NY???

coffee, which wonderful land did you come to ny from?

i have lived in ny all of my life and i love it here.

granted i dont like the bike lanes or cement medians but the good far outweighs the negatives.

try seeing some of the things ny is famous for. you can google that as well.

First of all welcome :)If recycling is your first complaint, I think that actually you are adjusting rather nicely.

I think overtime you will like it here or at least tolerate it better you will also make more friends something a bit hard to do in summer time when people are constantly away. You have not given it long enough. As above poster said every place has pros and cons.

Where did you move to maybe we can give you some pointers to make your adjustment easier.BP Flatbush Marine park Queens? What type of shule you want places to eat and shop etc..

I do definitely agree that NY does have some onerous regulations.I would just like to point out regarding the study published by George Mason university in Virginia”NY is the the state with the least freedom” I read about that study. The same study which criticized NY tax practices also mentioned Maine for over controlling for having a helmet law and criticized the northeast in general. The study seems to neglect that northeastern states are also where you can get access to many city and state benefits, and have some of the most tolerant people(albeit, sometimes a bit to liberal) you will find anywhere.

Hatzlacha in all please respond so we might help you with your move

Btw- you do not have to tie up cardboard boxes. Fold them and put them in the garbage. We do this all the time and never once had a problem. But don’t keep them whole cuz then you might have a problem.

“NYC can provide the filtration themselves like every other state”

True — but at a cost of many billions of dollars to build a large filtration plant. Given the hostility towards taxes expressed in forums such as these, this isn’t going to happen.

The mandatory recycling is free and saves us a lot of tax money as there is very limited landfill space in the NY area. I’ve lived in a lot of places with mandatory recycling and frankly NY does it better than anywhere else. You don’t need to put it in bags at all if you have separate labeled trash containers for recyclables.

” Unless you own a home in nyc”

NYC has some of the lowest property tax rates in America.

“NY is the the state with the least freedom”

I would argue NYC has the most freedom. NYC has the lowest rate of sexual assaults and the lowest rate of property crime of any city in America. And it has one of the lowest rates of homicide of any large city. Did the GMU researchers include freedom from crime in their criteria?

And as pointed out earlier, NYC is awfully tolerant of people with nonstandard lifestyles like ours. I’m in Europe right now and the local Jews were envious of the fact that my wife can practice medicine while wearing a headscarf — around here, many men feel they can’t wear yarmulkes on the street because they will stand out.

    or pay taxes

New York has by far the highest taxes in the country. Property, selective sales, individual income, and corporate-income taxes are particularly high.

there are two things that are guaranteed in life Death and Taxes

‘it’s an example as to how controlling this state is’

so is eating healthy, oh wait there goes all the kosher restaurants

so is breastfeeding, oh wait there goes all the formulas

so is not driving (people need exercise) no more cars

even though it’s for your own good forcing people to do it is bad (if I put 1 powerade bottle in the garbage can I can get a ticket, btw while were on that topic, you HAVE to clean out the bottle before disposing it)

    coffee addict-

I’m sorry you feel that way about NY, did you come here to visit for a few days before before spending so much money to move here?

Without knowing anything about you I don’t know how much I can help you.

Here’s an idea regarding the recycling issue you seem to be having. A friend of mine offered me a ride but said I have to sit in the front (and hold his seforim/ books) because the back of his car was piled high with trash- and that was an understatement!

He explained that he has a date in Baltimore the next week and ever since he agreed to go out with her his father insisted on throwing all the trash into the back of his car instead of sorting it. He told him to throw the garbage into the cans by the girls house before knocking on the door.

Dr pepper, yes I have my in laws live here and I’ve thrown stuff out in recycling but it wasn’t until I got here that I understood the magnamity of the issue.

You HAVE TO throw it out in white garbage bags

you HAVE TO crush up boxes

coffee addict, once you get used to all the recycling rules, it will become second nature, like riding a bike.

Taxes is the price you have to pay to live in ny, but ny is certainly less broke than other US states, and provides way more funding for many important areas (special ed).

Stop complaining about recycling in New York. In many countries in Europe, e.g. Switzerland

you can only use special garbage bags which are costly, and only for non-recycable rubbish.

PET bottles (e.g. plastic water etc) – back to the shop you bought them( e.g supermarket) they have a little hole somewhere where you spend ages posting each one through a hole 2 microns larger than the bottle.

Cardboard: normally collected on prescribed days and left out on the kerbside in bundles the night before (not earlier)

Paper: normally collected on prescribed days and left out on the kerbside in bundles the night before (not earlier)

Tins: To a collection point normally somewhere in town on the street

Glass: To a collection point normally somewhere in town on the street (sorted by colour, e.g.

    clear, green, blue)

Vegetable matter: (vegetables bought from the supermarket and not used within 6milliseconds, coffee grounds, peelings etc) Goes in a special biodegradeable plasic bag then in a green dustbin at your apartment block

Other stuff (except batteries hazardous stuff etc) in costly paid bags then in the rubbish container by your house. (Everybody crushes everything in order to fit as much as possible in those bag).
