What are your thoughts on learning sugyas followed by Rishonim, Acharonim and contemporary Halacha Lemaaseh? They even have these booklets with all the mekorot there.
There is a Sefer Kesef Nivchar 160 Kakolim or Sugyas with all references and psak.
Is this not just a repeat of the pilpul thread?
A pilpul is on a svora whereas a sugya is on a topic that appears frequently in shas. What is the meaning of שומע כעונה? Is it like speaking his own speech not having a sefer and a loud voice or the readers speech? A sugya
would be if we say שומע כעונה and when do we say it?There may be different processes but my personal inclination is to learn sugyos aliba d’hilchasa.
There is another fundamental difference as far as the shiurim are concerned. The Roshei Yeshiva who learn such as stockpile questions and try to answer them away with one nekudah. The standard shiur today is a conceptualization based on Brisket methodology.It is one question and one answer.
The brisket methodology I prefer is slow cooked BBQ style. On the other hand, Brisker methodology is not as you describe. The Brisker method seeks to find underlying principles that unify the various decisions of Chazal. In some respects it resembles Scientific Method which arose contemporaneously. The saying is that in pilpul yeshivos, bucharim can find seven terutzim for one kushia. In Brisk, they find one teretz for seven kushios
If like you, than pilpul is better because at least one tiretz will be correct whereas in your Brisker method the tiretz might be incorrect thereby not answering any of the questions.
WADR, Brisk does not provide a unifying theory . It divides into 2 dinim. Similalrly, RBBL, who was one of the greatest non family Talmidim is famous for his deciding as to what can be asked and what does not need to be asked. The scientific method is primarily based on the empiricism it contains just like the historical method. I do not see any connection to Reb Chaim whose words are Torah based not empirical or historical truths.
Me personally, I am a Chofetz Chaim Guy. People ask me all the time why we are said to learn differently than other Yeshivos. I always reply that we don’t focus so much on bringing in as many P’shatim as possible, rather we ask one simple question: what is the step of the Gemara trying to do, and we go on from there. bringing in all the P’shatim without fully getting the Hava Amina or the answer is not conclusive learning, according to me at least. this is why we go so slowly (compared to other Yeshivos), regarding the famous joke regarding Pesachim’s famous first phrase, אוֹר לְאַרְבָּעָה עָשָׂר: it takes 3 months for Chofetz Chaim guys to get out of the box.”
