It’s very frightening to me, how quickly this is spreading. I was very saddened to hear about the toddler who died. This is not just the common cold – it has devastating effects.

It has already spread to 24 countries and 10 states in the US.

The fatality rate is between 5% and 10 percent with around 165 dead out of 2000 infected (those are not the exact numbers).

Majority of those are from Mexico (about 150) which the medical care available is much less than here in the US (for those in the US). I wouldnt worry to much about it.

It is no more or less dangerous than the regular flu but since it is has mutated and is now airborne it travels much faster and humans have not built up a resistance to it.

They say that older people may be more resistant since it shows many similarities to viruses from earlier times.

As long as your healthy and have good hygeine you should be fine.

aussieboy: where did you get those numbers from? I just looked on CNN, and they have a full breakdown. They say there are only 154 confirmed cases of swine flu in the entire world, with only 8 deaths. That’s just over a 5% fatality rate. Also, 7 of the 8 deaths were in Mexico, where the people couldn’t get proper health care, and lived in very poor conditions. The one fatality in the US was a baby.

The regular flu infects and kills many more people than the swine flu. The whole thing is being overblown.

They’ll begin making them in a couple of varieties. A shabbos one, a weekday one, a shluf mask, and for those really religious, there’ll even be a shul one 😉

    Swine Flu is totally overblown.

Look at the World Health Organization (http://www.who.int/csr/don/en/) and the US Center for Disease Control (http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/). Look at CONFIRMED cases, not suspected/maybe/symptoms, etc. It seems like any time someone sniffles, they’re automatically tagged as a “confirmed” case.

As of April 30, 2009, 10:30 AM EDT, there were 109 confirmed cases in the US, including one fatality. As of As of 18:00 GMT, 29 April 2009 (updated for the more recent US figures), there were a total of 166 confirmed cases ON EARTH, including 8 fatalities.

Typically, 36,000 people die EVERY YEAR of the flu.

Swine flu is NOT a pandemic. And yes, we ARE overreacting. Big time. Just look at the stupid Egyptian government.

An average of 36000 Americans die every year from the common flu.

    http://www.cdc.gov/flu/keyfacts.htm

So far only one has died in the US. So i don’t know why people should be more worried then when the flu goes around every year.

I don’t know if people are aware but my mother heard on the radio that it is very hard for people in Mexico/Mexico city to get food! I would like to know if perhaps the YWN editor can verify this.If this is true maybe we can set up/ or an askan can set up a shipment of kosher food to be sent from us to Mexico!

I think the main problem is the world was not prepared for this Swine flu outbreak.

Masks are definitely pushing it, but if you wash your hands after you use the restrooms and wash your hands after a sneeze or a cough you are preventing yourself from catching this flu 🙂

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Mexico’s epidemic of the new H1N1 swine flu virus may not be as severe as it looked at first, with many mild cases that were not immediately noticed.

Mexican Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova said the public hospitals that treat roughly half the country admitted just 46 patients with severe flu symptoms on Thursday, down from 212 patients on April 20.

Not to be alarmist but I find it very disconcerting that about a week after this hit the news -the media-gov. complex is saying there is nothing to worry about. Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. The Spanish Flu of 1918 that killed 1/3 of the world is the same flu -H1N1. At that time they say it started in the spring time like this one and it was mild and it turned deadly in the fall. I’m not saying we definetly have a killer on our hands but whose to say we don’t? The US gov. at that time also played it down. If we don’t take precautions it could be a fatal mistake. Those masks don’t do anything for the flu- you need n-100 protection. If our instant-demanding generation out there puts our heads in the sand -who knows? All you people out there should demand your elected officials to develop the vaccine for as many people as they can before this virus mutates- possibly in the next couple of months!

Health: Get your facts straight. The flu in 1918 killed 15-20 million people are you telling me that there was only 45-60 million people alive in 1918?

    Dear Aussie boy,

I did make a mistake -I meant to write 1/3 of the world was infected.

BTW, you get your facts straight- 15-20 million deaths were the old statistics, the new statistics are 50-100 million DEATHS!! You’re online- look it up!

    Dear Ames,

I don’t want this socialist gov. to take over all business in the US, like they did with the car and bank industries; but they can push the pharm companies. Eg.- They can give them financial incentives and also to ease the regulations- like allowing vaccines to be grown in cells not just in eggs, which is a faster process!

Was this entire Swine Flu worth it just to have Joe Biden open his mouth prompting the NY Post to write that letter?

Just a thought. No opinion here.
