There’s a well known ממרא that חז״ל killed the יצר הרע for ע״ז and blinded the יצר הרע for זנות why didn’t they do anything to the יצר הרע of רציחה?
I figured this would be very apropos right before ראש השנהSeptember 18, 2022 4:23 pm at 4:23 pm #2125927ujmParticipant
In what way was the יצר הרע for זנות blinded?September 18, 2022 4:25 pm at 4:25 pm #2125929ujmParticipant
The יצר הרע for ע״ז used to be very powerful; after the change it is very weak (though not completely gone.)
The יצר הרע for רציחה was never as powerful.September 18, 2022 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #2125936Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipant
First, an attempt to _kill_ rehitza would show that the world is built on killing …
2nd, each yetzer has another side and eliminating the negative side will eliminate the positive. For example, when yetzer for A’Z was eliminated during BM2, so did prophecy. T’Ch tried to eliminate yetzer hara totally, but this stopped marriages, work, and egg production.
While the theory is clear, I am not sure what would be the downside of eliminating rehitza? No more shehita and surgeries? Maybe it goes to what is the motivation for rehitza – power and envy? The downside for those might be a drive for business and building communities.September 18, 2022 4:44 pm at 4:44 pm #2125941AviraDeArahParticipant
Yidden don’t have a yatzer hora for murder. Rav moshe said famously that the son of sam murderer couldn’t be Jewish, despite his last name, because Jews don’t kill unprovoked and for no reason.
Ujm, rishonim say that the weakening of the YH for znus was that they got rid of the taavah for krovimSeptember 18, 2022 6:26 pm at 6:26 pm #2125966Reb EliezerParticipant
It says רוב גנבי ישראל but retzicha on purpose is very uncommon by the Jews, so maybe it was not necessary.September 18, 2022 6:27 pm at 6:27 pm #2125968Reb EliezerParticipant
Ashaming people in public is more common.
