What do you think about all these tzedaka collectors in shul that come over to you with their hand stretched out in your face and they don’t move till you give them or they just stand there for 2 min and make you feel like a piece of garbage? I am going crazy from them and I think that it is really chutzpa!!
And I DO GIVE TZEDAKA so don’t start ranting to me how I don’t!!!!!
yes, its really not nice. If you dont want to give, you dont haave to!!
I really feel bad bad for them. Imagine being so destitute that you have to go around collecting in shuls. Nebach, how I feel for them. They have no morning, no night, just rush, rush, all day to put some pittance together so that they can finally fo back to their families. I really feel bad for them.
I give them whatever I can, and when I don’t have or I can’t, I simply smile warmly at them and tell them (or gesture) that I just don’t have any money.
Thank the Ribbono Shel Olam (and have extra Kavanna during Bentching) that you are not so desperate for money that you need to be Mitztarech L’Briyos, let alone embarass others into giving you, which (IIRC, I would have to look up the source and ask for help here) has the Din of Gezel.
I feel bad for them. However, there need to be rules that are followed here, and, as a yochid, I can’t be the one to do it. Collecting tzedakah does not permit anyone to disturb the tefilos of another, regardless of the form of need (health costs, huge debt, hachnosas kallah, etc.) or the magnitude of it – all of which affect the collector greatly. The responsibility falls on the shul, whether the rebbe, rov, or gabbai, to set the guidelines. There are certain shuls where this panhandling is completely banned. It can only be done in the corridor outside the beis hamedrash. Bothering a baal tefiloh is completely prohibited. The Mishna Berura is emphatic that it cannot be done during kriyas haTorah, and anywhere that one may not be mafsik to speak, one may not be approached about tzedokoh. Our shuls have been denigrated to other purposes besides tefiloh, and the result of our tefilos becoming lower priority in our lives is noticeable. We must retake control over our shuls, make them into the makom tefiloh they should be, all without decreasing the tzedokoh and chesed. But we need to make rules for each shul, and there are those who should be empowered to set these rules. Ye, these limitations need to include strict guidelines about cell phones. If you are willing to leave your cell ringer on, even on vibrate, then you are compromising how much of your concentration is available for davening – let the collectors distract you, as you’re not trying to daven anyway.
Kol haposhet yad nosnim lo applies only on purim. With that said, instead of ignoring the guy for 2 mins, how about making it clear right away that you have nothing so he doesn’t stand there for 2 minns.
First of all, all of these “collectors” are NOT TZEDAKAH !
Many of them are collecting for themselves. They are perfectly capable of working, yet find it easier to schnorr. that is what they are SCHNORRERS.
IF they have a valid letter from an ESTABLISHED VAAD, that is NOT EXPIRED, then IT IS TZEDAKAH.
Many of these Russians come around with letters from a Rav in Queens that states IF you believe the are Jewish, then give them.
with regard to the Chadishe guys that swarm into shul and wave their hands under your nose, they should know the Halachas and know when they can or cannot collect. fi you ignore them, they will learn.
