Paganism today is not the same paganism of ancient times. There is no more human sacrafice or “worshipping” them in the ways of Baal Peor.

People today generally have more compassion, while there was the Soviets , nazis , Khamer Rouge, they are more the exception than the rule

    Blubluh:
Rav Avigdor Miller interpreted it as meaning that you should not say
“If only I had lived in a previous era, I would have been able to serve
    Hashem in a better way.”

Ultimately, we go back to the notion that there are objective standards through which one can measure the “gadlus” of the gadolim of today versus those of prior generations

Actually, we simply trust in the gedolim of today – and of yesteryear –
when they tell us that they are not as great as the earlier gedolim.
They have also made such statements about the general population.

Randomex- Have the gedolim made such statements about the general population as well? Is it even true that the average Yossel nowadays is on a lower spiritual level than his counterpart living 100, 200 or 1000 years ago?

how did the gr”a come to live in the 18th century? Did Hashem send a neshama typical of earlier neshamos or it was possible for everyone in his generation to become the gr”a?

Rav Avigdor Miller quoted Rav Yerucham Levovitz (the Mirrer Mashgiach)
as telling the men of the Mirrer Yeshiva that they could not understand
the greatness of their grandmothers (or was it great-grandmothers?).

The Baal Akedah on the ten commandments לא יהי לך says that currently the greatest idol is money. People rush after it forgetting who has bestowed them with it.

“Horace and Aristotle told us of the virtues of their fathers, and the vices of
their own time, and authors down through the centuries have told us the same.
If they were right, men would now be bears.” -Montesquieu

It is a given that we honor and appreciate our for bearers for having transmitted the mesorah in conditions that although normal to them, seem incredibly difficult from our vantage point . We can say that the generation as a whole in all it’s intense complexity is less worthy than the proceeding, but that individuals can rise beyond the level of their zekainim, the baal teshuva is the proof of concept. It is also notable back in the mimetic framework , prior to the Orech Hashulchan and the Mishna Berurah the bar for what was an am ho’oretz was lower
