After Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman called on President Reuven Rivlin to pardon former IDF soldier Elor Azariya, IDF Chief Lt.-General Gadi Eizenkott expresses his opposition to clemency at this time. Azariya was sentenced to 18 months in prison after being convicted of manslaughter. Eizenkott used his authority to reduce the sentence by four months in a display of compassion after Azariya expressed remorse in his letter to him.
Azariya shot a wounded Arab terrorist dead and the courts ruled the terrorist was already neutralized and killing him was not a justifiable act.
Backing up the IDF Chief’s position are Chief of Manpower Division Major-General Moti Almoz and IDF Chief Prosecutor Brigadier-General Sharon Apek, who along with Eizenkott informed President Rivlin they remain opposed to clemency for Azariya.

Eizenkott is a man of honor and reason. It is telling that he is willing to take a stand for what is right and not give in to nationalistic impulses.
