Must upgrade from non-running sneakers to real, supportive sneaks. Have my eye on a pair of New Balance's. As a kid, I could never understand why my granfather still used his old pigskin NB's from the 70's/80's. That was until I got my first pair years ago. I wore them until my toes poked through the front(!) and still refused to throw 'em out! I tried gluing all the rips and tears (they'd been discontinued), until they were only wearable in summer camp, then I wore 'em until they were unsightly. I don't think I had the heart to throw them out until we repainted and boxed up the whole place. It was time to say goodbye to dear, old friends:)
I have a high arch and slight bunions (directly inherited from my mother's, mother's, mother). I've learned that NB wears like a dream and I found great one's I plan on ordering from 6pm.com. (It's actually Zappos.com's outlet, great shoes, great prices).

I'm so tempted to go to a running store in the city to get properly fitted and the whole 9 yards...
Anyone gone to a running store/specialist for your best fit and shoe?

asdfghjkl - don't swim regularly, because there is a dearth of seperate swimming facilities in NYC (outside of brooklyn). Despite this lack of water in my life, I'm a rabid fan of any water sport, particularly swimming. As a lifeguard, I'm sorta hooked... I find the smell of chlorine intoxicating! Years ago, an instructor of mine wore a T-shirt emblazoned, "Chlorine - The Breakfast of Champions." I totally hold by that:) [BONUS POINTS to the first person to place the origin of that slogan!]

Curious - Wow, I gotta look up those Shmuzin. There's so many good stuff to listen to and so little time! Yasher Koach with your shiurim and may the inspiration spread through your life! BTW - By NYC, I meant Manhattan:)

SJSinNYC - Since you recently had a baby, and haven't exercised in a while, strengthening your pelvis is very important for when you are beginning a workout routine. There are several pelvic exercises you can do, that just use your own body weight and don't require pricy equipment.

The next best thing to start doing, is strengthening your core. Pilates &/or Yoga, are excellent ways to accomplish that.

Walking is a great way to get your body used to moving around and a safe way to jump in to the workout world.

You can start doing push ups, & crunches - there are several types of workouts you can do for each. I'll tell you from experience, that those exercises are really amazing when it comes to toning.

If you want to start running, then intervals are the best way to get there. When going for a walk, start running for about 30 seconds - 1 minute, then stop running and continue walking, then after a few minutes, run again then stop and continue walking. Repeat these steps until you can no longer physically do anymore. Every day you go out for a walk, add a little more time to running, and a little less time walking. In time, this will build your endurance up enough to cut out walking altogether and be a sole runner.

P.S.-The times I wrote are only examples, your walk and run time will vary, depending on your fitness level. Have a goal to finish at least one mile and calculate how much running you want to include with your walk.

Also, let your doctor know you want to start a workout routine. It is very unlikely for your doctor to disapprove of this, unless you had some health condition that restricts you from performing certain exercises.

And another thing, try to see if any of your friends want to start to work out as well. Having a partner in this is very helpful, and motivating.

    Hope this helped. Good Luck!

asdfghjkl - ooohh, that's not fair! If I wrote where I run, I'd give my hideout away! I live in a little enclave somwhere's and I don't want to be too specific on here...

I have a whole routine, it goes like this: Walk a few blocks on the back streets, (away from the main thoroughfare with shuls, school, big minyan, lotsa people including my students:) to get to another area that's not as densely frum. Then walk briskly to warm up and run like the wind to the local park (like a mini Central Park) and marvel at the garden areas, the lean muscle of other runners, the sweeping Hudson river views. Wind down the run in a nice yuppie area and cool down and walk back the few blocks (on the back streets) to my area. Shoin! - The adventures of an inner-city BY Girl:)

asdfghjkl - oh. that's ok:) At least you hear my 'routine'...

I need to work on being kovea a real running zman! I'm embarassed to admit that I run when I can squeeze it in. Used to go early in the AM with a friend. We haven't done it for awhile and I gotta work on a set time, instead of "sometime," somewhere on the To Do list which ends up being sometime in the afternoon, evening or night...

Our thread is back!! My running's been good lately, upping the mileage a bit (against doctor's orders). I run whenever I have time, morning, afternoon or evening.

asdf - general rule of thumb, if the cold stays "above the neck" ok to run, once you feel it in the chest, lay off. Or try the dreaded treadmill instead...

    Asdfghjkl - Refua Shelaima!

Curious - I'm just curious, where do you run? I think I'm more intrigued about where you are able to "get away with running" in a Jewish area (presuming you live in one:) I'm probably in the same boat as you in this one, was just wondering...

I thought I'm the only one entitled to be curious!
And yes, I live in a very jewish area. I run mostly on the treadmill now, however I am itching to get it all outdoors. Given my neighborhood I would need to go some way out so as not to offend/be machshil/irritate the folks around me. I've already started checking out parks/trails that are not "in it" and will try to find something suitable (even if I have to drive to get there...). Sighs. That's the price to pay for living where I do. I am very lucky to have a running partner though our schedules often conflict.
The real question, what do you wear?! :)
And, we need to team up!

Curious - Ah, the age old question. I want to be properly outfitted for running without compromising on Tznius. I wear a base layer of a moisture wicking T and leggings, and a thin, fleece lined jacket in winter, or just a big T in the summer. and yes, a long skirt. I'm SOO tempted to short skirt it but my dignity won't allow me to step outside like that (short skirt+leggings look). That's just my take.... Though I feel like I'm gonna cave one day...
    That's it.
I've been browsing around for good gear bec. it's important to me that I feel good with what I'm wearing (i.e. chic, pro running gear and not shlumpy looking) and it's also a motivator... (tip - find them on sale - it feels even better!) So if the Nike jacket and streamlined T shirt is gonna do it....

I don't know about the rest of you, where I live it's not only freezing weather, but the wind factor is our of control! When I run I wear at least 5 layers, and every inch of me is covered, but the ski mask tends to scare people...

p.s. not a big fan of the cold!

Yoshi, I totally understand. You have to choose the right time of day to go and wear layers, with the bottom layer being a mositure absorbing shirt like Ashreinu said. A wind/running jacket will also give warmth without the bulkiness.

Or like I said earlier - the dreaded treadmill.

Eating well is a big factor in running well.
I've researching running nutrition and it can get so complicated! I mean, you'd need to invest so much effort into the calculations and percentages!
I just try to eat healthy staples and basics like whole grains, protein, fruit & veggies, water and vitamins (ok, maybe a few midnight snacks snuck in somewhere;)

Also, what helped me alot was actually writing down what I ate daily for a few weeks. It really helped me focus on eating sound, healthy meals and of course it's a great feeling to look back and see how healthy and organized one can be:)

Please share what your experience has been food-wise, and specifically running-wise....

Hey, here's a poll for YWN runners:
    1) What was your initial motivation for taking up running? (i.e. weight loss, excersize, marathon)
    2) Where you successful in meeting that goal? (lost weight, got into excersize routine, ran a marathon)

    Share your experience!

Ran in a 5k this sunday. Entering races is my big motivator.

Ashreinu, you're 100% correct! Writing down the foods I ate helped start me off on eating healthy.
Food wise, I'm eating around 2,500-3,000 calories, depending on my activity level for that day. 50grams of protein, 30grams of fiber, tons of veggies and fruits, a multi vitamin, 8+ cups of water, and cheese products. I also allow a cheat meal a week, and a small piece of extra dark chocolate at night. I mess up sometimes, but I just pick myself off, and get right back on the wagon as if nothing ever happened.

What does everyone's exercise regimen consist of?

I upped my running mileage to 25-35 miles a week depending on if I do a long run that week.
I do all different types of push ups, chin ups, bicycle crunches, leg lifts, lunges, squats, yoga, tai chi, and karate (I don't do all these things every day, I alternate). Oh yeah, and the best exercise of all, running around with the baby!

    1) What was your initial motivation for taking up running? (i.e. weight loss, excersize, marathon)

I was getting so bored of the elliptical, so I decided to try running one night, and even though I hardly could do one mile at the time, I felt great! I've grown a love for running for exercise, and it helps clear my mind, and I love running in races!

    2) Where you successful in meeting that goal? (lost weight, got into excersize routine, ran a marathon)

My list of fitness goals are infinite. I make little ones at a time, but I never stop making new goals for myself. As of right now, my goals are to up my number of reps in different exercises, up my mileage in running, and run in this years NYC marathon.

    What about you?
