I have known about this for some time, but I don’t know that I like how, specifically Frum based instructions for how to game the system.

This fellow posts how you can save quite a bit on flights to and from Israel, but it’s technically not quite Kosher’. He researches which cities in the US are running cheap promotions to Israel. And since all flights or most, go thru NY, he advised that you can take a one way flight to say, Houston, then, start your international trip, Houston, NY, direct to TLV or with a Euro stopover, and then return, he tells that you can just leave JFK with your luggage. This is all true, but it’s not legal according that you have a contract with the airline to complete all segments, just like you wouldn’t be able to start the trip from JFK and not Houston. I think we all know this already.

My issue is if this is constitute a bit of a Chilull Hashem or not.

Maybe b’Tznina, is one thing, if someone does it but to so publicize this, is a little embarrassing to me.

I don’t quite get your description. If you miss the first leg of your flight, the airline will usually automatically cancel subsequent legs. So you couldn’t do that.

In any event, even if you are breaking a contract with the airline, that is not illegal. It would be like breaking a contract with your cellphone company. You might have to pay a fee or lose your connection flight, but it is definitely not against the law or unethical in any way.

I don’t understand. If it’s legal, what’s wrong with publicizing it? If it’s illegal, why is it okay if it’s done b’tzinah?

Thanks for letting us know. I’ll be sure to check it out next time I need a flight.

Check the OP again. It was about missing the LAST leg of the flight, not the first.

How is this a problem? Aren’t you actually saving the airline money by not taking the last leg because they now have less weight on the plane?

(I am not endorsing all the “shtick” that Dan does but this particular one sounds fine to me)

You have a contract with airline to complete all segments? Say who?

You purchased the right to fly. A seat on the flight. What happens if you decide you don’t want to fly at all, have you violated a contract.

    Your initial premise is flawed.

The airline pricing system is also flawed because how can it make sense that you would pay hundreds of dollars less to fly the flight if they add on additional legs?

My cousins did that, they went from jfk to florida, then from florida to jfk, and then from jfk to israel to save a couple thousand dollars.

Dan didnt make it up it has been discussed on the travel blogs for years. The only thing that Dan ever broke himself to my knowledge was the El AL deal. His contribution is that he is great at explaining concepts and responds to lots of questions on his posts.

@YWMod42 the airlines could be losing money if the flight is full and someone would have paid full fare for that route – not as uncommon as you would think.

    Either way its not illegal.

@nishtdayngesheft there are a lot of factors that go into how expensive it is for an airline to fly from a certain airport(for example LGA vs. JFK etc.) and it also has to do with supply and demand (ie. how many seats on that route are typically used etc.) Sometimes there are normally scheduled routes which are rarely filled up so they are much cheaper. Jfk to TLV is the most lucrative of any route in the world so there is no incentive for the airlines to price low. There are a lot of quirks in the system but at the end of the day it is the most profitable for the airlines.

The fact is that they won’t let you join the itinerary in NY, when the ticket originated in Houston.

I used to do this many times in Europe, where the same thing, the premier route in that case was Amsterdam to Tel Aviv, KLM would charge about half from Dusseldorf which was a 2 hours train ride.

I was told by others that if you do it many times, they would charge you the real cost.

I would say that this is a loophole, maybe it’s not illegal. Certainly it would seem that Kulei Alma, does not consider this to be illegal.

I was reading about this on travel forums today and no one makes the case that it’s dishonest.

You totally missed the point. Nobody ever mentioned joining a flight in NY if it originated in Houston.

In the case you cited, the person would fly from NY to Houston. Take the flight that originates from Houston in Houston.

THEN, on the way back, instead of flying to Houston back to NY, just get off the plane in NY and skip Houston.

    Jbaldy,

I am talking about taking the same exact flight to Israel, JFK to TLV. If you fly from LGA to ATL back to JFK and then catch the same flight to Israel was hundereds of dollars cheaper than skipping the LGA_ATL_JFK legs. You boarded the same exact airplane on the JFK-TLV flight.

Your reason does not respond because it is the same exact flight just with several extra flights added to it.

@nishtdayngesheft You are kind of missing the point here – it is a completely different route as you can’t board in JFK. They are flying to Israel either way so thats a sunken cost. Because of supply and demand seats on the flight from ATL for example would be cheaper than straight from JFK. JFK seats will always be filled either way making them more expensive. Making the flights from ATL cheaper makes it more likely for them to recoup the airlines costs and to make a profit. It actually makes a lot of sense.

I’m saving $299 by not going to Israel. Not only that, but I can even make money by going to work that week!
