Hello, Thank you for thinking of me. Actually, there was an incident nearby last night.
A kosher restaurant was set on fire last night, in what police are treating as an “arson attack”.
JS Kosher Restaurant, in Prestwich, north Manchester, was set ablaze in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Fire fighter tackled the blaze for over an hour, with the Manchester Evening News reporting that the ground floor was badly damaged.
There are no reports of anyone injured in the fire.
It is not yet clear what the motivation was for the attack. JS is Manchester’s oldest Jewish restaurant, having served the community for 60 years.
This is not the first time that JS has had a fire. In 2008 the restaurant underwent a makeover after a fire damaged its second floor and destroyed its kitchen. However, that fire was not thought to be arson, with the blaze attributed to an overheated oven.
In a statement released this morning Greater Manchester Police said they were “investigating an arson attack at a restaurant on Kings Road in Prestwich, that happened at about 3.30am on Tuesday 6 June 2017.
“No one was injured and no arrests have been made.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 206 06/06/17, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
In a statement to the JC, the Community Security Trust (CST) said:
“We are working very closely with GMP but there is no specific information at this time to prove that the attack was or was not antisemitic and we don’t want to jump to any conclusions about what has occurred.
“We will be sending out security advice to restaurants and shops in Greater Manchester today but this is purely precautionary”.

RabbiofCrawley, of course I know Dayan Krausz and many of his sons and sons in law. He is not a Rt Hon, which is a title reserved for Her Majesty’s Privy Councillors (LB, you’ll have to google that, too complicated to explain). However, I would use Herr Rabbiner for him. He doesn’t walk too well nowadays, but I often see him at Mincha in Ohel Torah.LB, and everyone else. I have explained this before, but No idea where. I use Geordie as I was born within Newcastle upon Tyne. Geordie is a term for the locals in that area of the North East of England. Not all Geordies are very poor, although any self respecting Geordie will be working class. I an of course slightly different as I am a Geordie613. (If Bobov can do it, so can Geordies!)
In the previous iteration of the YWN CR, we had subtitles. After 5 years I was finally awarded the title, ‘Malach of the North’. A quick google search of Angel of the North, will reveal a huge monstrosity, which stands at the Southernmost point of Gateshead, which lechol hade’os is just outside the Geordie area, looking south. It is one of the iconic symbols of the local councils of Gateshead and Newcastle, together with the Tyne Bridge.LB, you may hear my accent in my words. It probably sounds like London, the accent is known as ‘Received Pronunciation’. Anyone who follows these forums will know that I was brought up in South Africa, and moved over 20 years ago. However, a geordie accent is very very different, and probably sounds like a foreign language to outsiders. In fact it developed from the Vikings who arrived and settled those parts many years ago.

True. But, Received Pronunciation is common in North West London, where the bulk of non-chassidish frum Jews live, and where I spent 7 of the last 10 years.Herr Rabbiner is German. If you know Dayan Krausz Shlita, it would make perfect sense. He is originally Swiss, but is very ‘Yekkisch’.

In terms of Manchester, I love coming to MH Shul , especially seeing the Rt. Hon. Gabi Lock cheering everyone up , delin and dine with that lovely northern customer service, dovid’s deli with his family run cholent factory , and and the wonderful tourist attractions of manchester, er er er,,, er oh ! just thought of one!! manchester Piccadilly rail station and on my way home sown south, I normally take a small detour to the world famous town of Macclesfield and then head home.
In terms of The north east, I love whitley bay with it’s lush sandy beaches heading north through the pretty suburb of Cullercoats up towards south shields and then berwick upon tweed before entering scuetland.
I love Newcastle’s northern suburbs , particularly Jesmond and Gosforth where the heimishe kehilla is based with its esteemed rav , shul and mikvah,
I also like Newcastle’s grainger market and the eldon square shopping centre – probably the best you’d find up northWashington is OK as is Durham but Gateshead strikes my heart.
The Angel (what you call malach) is what attracts all the tourists up to gateshead. However people underestimate what gateshead has to offer.
The Sage centre, Baltic arts centre, the shipley art gallery, gateshead leisure centre , Gateshead library, MetroCentre, Swing Bridge, Gateshead millenium bridge,Also, interestingly there is a kehilla in gateshead with a shul but it doesn’t compare with the growing kehilla of newcastle……

I didn’t realise there was a Hasidic kehilla in Crawley. Unless a few kids fell off their overcrowded coach on their way back from a Shpatzeer in Brighton.
Manchester is great, especially with Gabi Lock and the various other characters that populate our rain sodden streets. You have to take a walk in the Irwell River valley next time you’re up here. Make sure you have a police escort so you don’t get mugged.
Ah, Macclesfield! I once met a Vizhnitzer family there. I had to ask what they were doing in Macclesfield of a Sunday night. Apparently they were on route back to the Hackney Riviera, from a weekend in Llanddudno, where the Rebbe spends his summer holidays. (That is true, btw).
Washington is ok, because chances are you’ll blink while passing it, so it doesn’t bother anyone. (For our US co-CR’ers, that is the original Washington, where your Geordie Washington’s family originates – again, that is true.)
I spent a few afternoons in the Toon. the locals all got colds when they saw me. They sneezed in the traditional “A-Jew!” style, along with the “What time’s the bus Jew?” and “Jew got the time?”. I know the previous Mara d’Asra of Newcastle, Rabbi Black, currently Rav in Kenton, down your way.
Gateshead, however, is the Yerushalayim d’Eiropa. A shomer Shabbos only kehilla, growing at a fast rate, now 130 years old.

Interesting you say Kenton is where rabbi Black is now Mara Dasra, There is another Kenton , in Newcastle , this Kenton was home to many of Newcastle Hebrew Congregation members , so rabbi black obviously has alot to do with the word “kenton” .
Also , I one shabbos walked over to the Shul in Newcastle from Gateshead and didn’t know the code , so went “mezuzah searching” many homes had mezuzot but only one home answered the door (I guess the others were away for sheva bruchos in Doncaster or tief in a reb chaim so didn’t hear me) she invited me in and warmly welcomed me and explained how upset she was that the community is dwindling and is now a very small fraction of what it once was and praised Gateshead for it’s large, growing kehilla . The husband quickly interrupted “True Newcastle is dying out , But Gateshead is also dying out” “are you sure|” she queried” With his hands trembling , he responded ” I am sure”
So there is a myth out there, (which I heard from someone 2 miles across the river ) that Gateshead is dwindling, but I, having Studied for a short period in that town can say loud and clear “It is a myth!” Gateshead is thriving whilst maintaining that traditional simplicity and community life that Manchester is so well known for (and I admire so much that I may consider moving to Manchester because of it).

By the way last time i was in manchester on leicester road , I got shouted anti semitic comments by a van who was stuck in traffic, moving slowly, I proceeded to take a photo of him, which he didn’t like at all and swung his van around , parked it and began to chase me on foot , I ran to my car and zoomed off round the block three times making sure that he lost me
