Anyone know if the 14-button mechanical locks are secure? A local locksmith is claiming that the outside knob is easily broken off, allowing a burglar to get in.

There were some issues with Shabbos locks in Brooklyn recently.. Many houses were broken into on Shabbos..

Some of the popular Shabbos locks can be opened very quickly with an inexpensive magnet.

Sooo funny. Someone told me that her locksmith came to put in a shabbos lock and asked her what she wanted the combination to be. She was having a hard time deciding so he gave her the suggestion of shabbos in gematria. She used it and then realized that probably everyone in the neighborhood who uses that locksmith probably has the same code- lol. I find this very amusing:)

The 5-button lock is easily opened with a strong magnet. There was an article about this in the New York Times and other papers picked up the story. I think the company is actually being sued.

A local locksmith is trying to convince me that 14-button locks are not so strong. These are the locks that have numbers 0-9 and letters CXYZ in 2 vertical rows. Of course he wants to change the lock for me but…

I suspect the locksmith is looking for business, & is trying to capitalize on the Shabbos-Simplex lock story even though my lock is not the one written about.

The problem with the Simplex locks is the chamber. When the chamber is on the outside of the door it is susceptible to rare-earth magnet attacks. The models that have the chamber on the outside of the door are the ones where the five buttons are in a straight line. The models where the numbers are in a circle have the combination chamber on the inside of the door and are immune to that kind of attack.

(It does have a week point, but I still use this type.)

If you are getting the 14 button lock my suggestion to you would be to buy two (either for you and a friend or for a front and back door). Of the 14 buttons, one is to clear the combination, 5 are for the combination and 8 are wrong numbers.

Since 5 are supposed to be in the combination, if you trade one of the “combination” pieces from one lock with a “wrong number” piece from the other lock, one lock will have six numbers in the combination while the other one had four. This will throw off anyone trying to break in. I don’t know anything about the strength of the lock itself, I never break locks to gain access.

it is susceptible to rare earth magnet attacks

i dont know what an earth magnet is but if they are so rare whats all the concern?

It’s not rare and it’s not from rare earth, that’s just what it’s named.

A powerful one can be bought on eBay for $40.

(If you ever took apart a hard drive you’d see two small, but powerful, rare earth magnets.)

If you are who I think you are, I think you’d enjoy reading what Wikipedia has to say about them.

its actually neodymium…its a naturally occurring magnet other than lodestone…most commercial magnets are just regular pieces of ferrous metals which are magnetized. neodymium is naturally magnetic and its VERY strong. ever wondered why a neocube is called a neocube? now you know…teh balls are neodymium.

In our last home our 14 button lock was still working after 25+years and B”H no problems. With all these comments, i think we should’ve removed it and put it up in our new apt. rather than the 5 button one.

    #785448

if he wanted you to know who he thinks i am he probably would have said who he thinks i am and since i am who he thinks i am i appreciate that he did not say who he thinks that i am but since i do not want a conversation about who he thinks i am since i am who he thinks i am i will not allow further posts on the subject of who i am and i will delete these eventually sorry

Mod-80: about a year and a half ago a convo between me and Dr. P (about 2 posts each) was deleted from the Riddle Thread. It was a joke that you thought was serious (and personal).

    yes

and he responsible for deleting 98% of the posts, so if anyone feels they are being treated unfairly you know who to blame

    Pac-Man-

It wasn’t on the riddle thread and it’s still there.

(Although my post was heavily edited, you did get to read it for a minute and a half in it’s genuine form. It wasn’t personal (at least not against Moderator-80). It was obvious that I was joking but Moderator-80 knew it, but was afraid others may take it seriously. I’ll link to it if Moderator-80 promises not to delete it.)

Mod 80, may I say that your sense of humor and keen wit are in rare form today. I am enjoying it, even if I cannot understand half of it. It is making me zeyer confused.

Our new place already had a combo lock, so I packed away the old one.

Here are a few pieces of information about that lock:

Medeco is practically pick-proof, because its pins use left, right and straight pins, as well as differing heights.

Feldspar is (IIRC) a naturally-occurring type of magnet.

    Dr. Pepper-

I was wondering if anyone would point out that my number wasn’t 100% accurate, since nobody sets all 13 buttons to “push” or all 13 to “don’t push” in one lock (I assume this is what you mean).

It’s also true that if five “push” pieces is the default, a variance of 2 would put the range from 3 to 7, not 3 to 9.

Maybe I posted those numbers for simplicity’s sake.

Maybe I’m just not that good at math ?

    Look for post # 104716.

In that conversation volley I referred to Joseph by his original SN before he changed it to Joseph. I noticed that in other posts that mentioned that SN it got edited and I didn’t want to antagonize anyone.

Please help me keep my clean record and don’t delete this. If you want you can replace the numbers with asterisks.

Dr P. I think you have deleted posts in the Shidduch Stories thread. Very funny stories but not all of them made it through.

Good to know. I’ll have to look at them. -95

I don’t know of any in that thread that were deleted, although there may be some from when my wife shared this SN with me. (Too lazy to check.)

There is one that I see has been removed although I don’t know why or by who. Some time ago I asked someone if their SN had anything to do with a bungalow colony. I’m not sure what was inappropriate or offensive with that comment, unless a moderator thought it would blow the persons identity?
