I like pizza. I would like some now.

I’m in manhattan right now, but I don’t think there are any pizza shops near where I am. Sadly.

    #1006022

Very interesting! Just spoke to my Rov. He explained to me that this is not based on a personal minhag but rather this is the halacha based on the shulachan aruch and mishna brurah. Kol Hakovad to Rabbi Bodner! I always respected his psak!

Statistics that are based on non jews have no relevance for yiddin because we are physically different, right?

In other news, popa should know that pizza can be delivered even in Manhattan. Ive seen it.

who is going to start? I always had, even in fast paced NY. Pizza was always a substitute for an in home, meal, a quick lunch, or a mobile lunch, and sometimes a business lunch. Plain understanding of the halacha of pas haba bekisnin means that if you eat a given quantity in a given time (kedi achilas pras) it is kvius seudah. And the plain meaning of kvias seudah is reflected in any of the above scenarios.

@Squeak do you really think most pizza is eaten as a snack??????

If you do how old are you? Just curious.

Its not a matter of what I think. Its a matter of fact that a torah yid must acknowledge, statistics are goyish.

Gosh, I thought squeak was being facetious!

Believing that an outcome is ‘determined’ by statistics is wrong. And there is even the idea that our bodies are different, as you wrote (although they note that we still depend on medical knowledge gleaned from experiments and data with goyim).

But why would you assume we have different pizza eating habits?

    #1006032

You have to discount the people who only eat it as a meal davka because they hold you have to wash. When you take them out of the goyishe statistics, you’ll find that most yidden eat pizza as a snack.

I had this friend in yeshiva who never ever ate lunch. He just grabbed a quick snack of pizza halfway between breakfast and supper.

So far I’m just basing this on the song that goes “we are so different from them” (TTTO mikoilois mayim rabim). I havent even started bringing in my eigeneh svaros about buffalo chicken pizza vs sloppy skimpy kosher pizza.

I was always bothered by the fact that many people say mezonos on pizza. The situations in which I see people doing this almost always look like kivious seuda to me.

One specific story that really bothered me was when a certain guy refused to eat a vegetable slice because he thought there might be bugs in the vegetables, yet he ate 2 regular slices without washing when he was clearly sitting down to lunch.

“I was always bothered by the fact that many people say mezonos on pizza. The situations in which I see people doing this almost always look like kivious seuda to me.”

What also bothers me is that a slice of frozen pizza (like Amnon’s or J2, which I beleive is the same size as fresh) is between 4 and 5 ounces. Two slices may very well be 4 kaBeitsim, kiviat seuda. No one seems to mention that. People just mention the subjective “It’s my snack” which really means “I’m too lazy”

Why? There are at least some Sfardim who only wash on matzah during Pesach; the rest of the year they say mezonot.

Takah, it must be because Matzah is round. And therefore, similar to what Popa said, if you eat a slice you’d have to wash but the pie is round so that can’t be Hamotzi!

Well, no. The thing with Matzah is that it is very thin, like a cracker. Even there, when you are obviously Kove’a Seuda you would have to wash.

The Jewish fast-food fast-Bracha industry will have to find another solution. Now we can start making cooked pizza.

What is the bracha on my deep dish pizza?

    The crust is:

liquid: 1 1/4 cups water; 1/2 cup butter.

grain: 3 cups flour; 1/2 cup corn.

Between the butter and the corn, is it possible the ikar taam is not the flour?

Some pizza definitely is mezonos. You can taste it, it tastes like cake.

the following are the nutritional facts of one slice of pizza from a frozen kosher pizza.

Calories: 390 calories from fat: 170

Total fat: 19 grams Saturated fat 11 grams 55% daily value

Sodium: 1000 mg which is 42% daily value

    Total carbs: 34 grams

    Protein: 22 grams

Now thats just ONE SLICE!! I’m not coming from a health point, but

rather, Can anyone find me any other “snack” with such nutritional value?!

I just want to point out to those who say they are just “snacking” on one slice, and it just happens to be in between breakfast and supper; Stop fooling yourself!

    Enjoy! I think I’m just gonna snack on a 16oz steak now…

Take a look at the nutrition facts on a bag of potato chips, or a chocolate bar.

It works the other way around. You don’t have to be Koveah Seudah in Pas Haba Bekisnin unless it’s a min. of 3 or 4 Beyzim, nor should you.

And the trend nowadays to wash all time -is a Kula. Better to wash on a real piece of bread, than to wash on pizza.

from popa_bar_abba:”Take a look at the nutrition facts on a bag of potato chips, or a chocolate bar.”

Total Fat: – 1 slice 19 grams saturated fat 11gms

    – -chocolate 8gms saturated fat 5 gms

Sodium: – 1 slice 1000mgs yes thats one thousand!

    – – potato chips 120mgs

    – -chocolate 27mgs

    Carbs: – 1 slice 34 gms

    – – potato chips 10 gms

    – -chocolate 14gms (all from sugar)

Protein: – 1 slice 22 grams yes thats twenty two!

Thanks for bringing out my point even better. Basically get your facts straight before you comment.

I just want to point out that years ago, in my neighborhood a Sefardi opened a Pizza store. it was a new thing then in Flatbush (more than 30 years ago – don’t ask my age) He was a talmid chochom and he baked the pizza, he insisted it was a regular piece of bread and couldn’t understand why no body was washing on it. He felt that the topping was superficial and didn’t affect the dough itself.

I usually eat the whole chocolate bar. But if you eat only a quarter, you might try simply eating a quarter slice of pizza.

(And I figured you’d find a 1 oz bag of potato chips, but most people eat the bags that have like 240 calories, or eat from a big bag and eat half of it.)

And now, please post for us the nutritional content in 2 Entenmanns (or Franczoz) donuts. And I don’t mean the mini ones. I mean Entenmanns, rich chocolate frosted, full size, donuts, that you love, es yitzchok. I’m sure we’ve all eaten two of them as a snack, at some point.

It might very well require Hamotzi just from the sheer (pun intended) volume.

Anyhow, I thought the point popa was getting at was that the nutritional value posted on the box is not the kovea for kvius seudah.

I wash on Tradition instant soup because it has as many calories as a slice of pizza, and even MORE sodium (so I use a little extra water).

And now thanks to popa I am compelled to go buy a box of Entenmanns. For snack I will probably eat 4-5 of the frosted ones, with coffee (as they serve in gan eden), but ich schwer, I will wash before I eat the sixth.

What kind of crazy guidelines are we making up now?

Update: I couldn’t get past 2. And the coffee is so much better without the donuts!

    #1006053

Popa! My gosh! You’ve got some appetite! Don’t mind me asking how much you weigh?

Either way on a serious note of course you’ll find tons of junk food with tons of calories and fat, but they will never have(or “most likely will never have” for those who like to be medayik) high levels of ALL the properties of a standard full meal, which are calories, fat, carbs, AND protein, except for pizza of course. I’m not a nutritionist, but this is pretty basic.

Leftover bagels and lox from the bris.

A bris? I wanna go to a bris!

Oh, I was in the middle of typing and remembered I already admitted to going to a bris today.

I took my bagel and tuna to go, since I did the “baal-ha-bust-out”. There wasn’t lox. There won’t be lox at my kids’ brisses either, since it’s expensive, and who says you have to serve lox at a bris?

But I really do like bagels and lox. So I’ll buy myself a package and eat it with the leftover bagels, after my kids’ brisses.

One pizza cann be drastically different nutritionally from another. I read the labels, and one brand was more then twice the calories of the next.

Perhaps he was Talmid Chochom but didn’t know S’A. The Mecaber says Simon 168 #7 there are different ways to make a Mezonos. The second way is a Machlokes between the Mechaber & Rema on how much other stuff. But on the First way there is no Machlokes. This case is similar to Pizza. It doesn’t have to have more other stuff than the bread.
