Israir: Sefer Torah update

israir2.jpgRadio Kol Chai has reported that a compromise has been worked out regarding the Sefer Torah on the Israir 767 that flies to Paris and London on Shabbos when not doing the transatlantic run. The Sefer Torah will now be removed from the aircraft and left with the Ben Gurion Airport Rabbi; in the airport shul aron kodesh for the weekends. It’s interesting to note that Israir did not blink, of course, about its 27+ scheduled flights every Shabbos.

  1. i don’t understand, why is there no demand that they do not fly on shabbos, seeing that they are a jewish owned airline?

  2. The point is not that Israir did not blink, why should they? The point is that those dealing with them made no comment and threatened no boycott over the Shabbos flying. Now that’s interesting.

  3. My gut feeling is that YW EDITOR would like to see a boycott on Israir, but being a good boy he does not want to chas vasholom doubt or cast doubt on the Gedoilei Yisroel for even one second.

Kol Hakov on your emuna peshutah.

Of course this all speculation on my part.

YW editor, we would like to hear your views, if you have one. The only times i remember that you actually expressed your own personal opinion is against NK and once last week regarding Israir on which you quickly backed down on.

  4. How about a grass roots effort by the consumers to have Israir make an effot not to fly on shabbos???????? Call and write them. Maybe they will listen.

    (Are they “jewish” owned?)

  5. The reason why israir could and elal cant is because elal used to be state owened in essence representing the state of israel and all jews. so in the eyes of the world elal is jews, so thats a big chillul hashem. If elal changes its name and logo the gidolim would not ossur them. its more about chillul hashem then chillul shaboss.
P.s egged also runs on shaboss you dont see people stop using egged.

  6. “The reason why israir could and elal cant is because elal used to be state owened in essence representing the state of israel and all jews.”

Don’t you see a contradiction in those who do not believe that the State of Israel represents all Jews suddenly deciding that it does when it comes to boycotting El Al?

  7. Boruch Hashem! When they first announced that they have a sefer torah on board I commented that they shouldn’t fly with that plane on shabbos or not have the sefer torah on board. I am not telling them what to do but if they have a sefer torah on board then it would be a big kiddush hashem if they keep shabbos when they don’t have to do. Elal had to they had no choice israir currently has a choice if they boycott them they might not really have much of a choice depends how many jews use them. Also israir didn’t represent israel and elal did thats why everyone made such a big deal that they flew on shabbos and everyone was right.

  8. I think Israir has the same Jewish ring as ELAL. I wasn’t pro the ELAL boycott and don’t think there should be on against Israir. However I am curious as to why boycott one and not the other.
With that said, as Eric55 mentioned, Eged runs on Shabbos, why have they not been boycotted?
I disagree re it being more of chillul Hashem rather than chillul Shabbos – most people (non shomer shabbos or non Jews) wouldn’t pay any mind to an ELAL flight on Shabbos. Only the frum community would – so I think it was about chillul Shabbos.

  9. i think the reason why the gedolim are more strict with ELAL than Israir is because elal claims they represent the state of israel. they advertise using the motto ” FLY ELAL, THINK ISRAEL”. the gedolim dont want an airline which claims they are representing israel to be mechalel shabbos bifarhesya. Is israir right

  10. KISHKA made a good point.
FOR ALL THOSE WHO SEE THE MEDINA AS ‘TREIFE’ and DO NOT BELIEVE THAT IT REPRESENTS JEWS BUT RATHER NATIONALISTS:
El Al is the airline company which represents the STATE OF ISRAEL. Those flights should be ‘off limits ‘ to alll of you whether they fly on Shabbos or not!

  11. Listen you can’t go bullying the whole world and every company to stop being mechalel of course it’s a dream every yid would want to see, but..

The main problem with ELAL was its past promises and the idea that even though it’s a public company (actually 35% is still government owned), it still carries the name as the official Israeli national carrier. Also imagine the gedolim come out with a boycott against ELAL and Israir at once. They try not to impose the impossible on us. Same thing is with Egged even though it bothers all of us their public chilul Shabbos. Can someone go and boycott them and tell everyone to stay at home for a few weeks (easy for the Americans to say but for most Israelis it’s their ONLY means of getting around to work shop etc etc).

  12. Just if someone could explain me why since you are shomer shabbos the whole rest of the world must be shomer shabbos too?? The only reason we took issue with Elal was because they TOLD US they would not fly on shabbos originally and therefore they were testing our resilience, we then proved that we will not be toyed with. What does that have to do with IsraAir??

  13. Personally, I think, “Why fly Isair if it is mechallel Shabbos openly if there are alternatives?”

And that is the operative word here: “Alternatives”. There aren’t many alternatives to egged.

I wouldn’t wait for any official boycott. I just started my own.

I’m not only referring to the extreme kenoim but to people who see the Medinah as adanger to frumkeit, which are many who comment on this site….
Furthermore, if the intentions in stopping ELAL from flying on Shabbos are really pure and Leshem Shomayim, why dont the Gedolim further the restrictions to other religious issues, like separate seating, female passengers and stewardess honoring the tzinus code, etc. etc……?

  15. IsraAir has ads that say “Torah Bashomayim He” (spell check). Here we have an airline, that promotes that they have a Sefer Torah on board. They are trying to play to the crowd – but is nobody thinking about their Shabbos flights? I want to say again, i don’t think either airline should be boycotted. As much as we would like to see everyone be shomer shabbos and that everyone should be shomer Torah Umitzvos, it’s not a reality right now and in my humble opinion, forcing our views on the rest of the people, would probably do more harm than good.
I also agree with the comment regarding the view of the Medina, for those who don’t hold of it or accept it, there shouldn’t be any issue with the “State’s Airline” flying on Shabbos. And on that note, were any of the Mizrachi Rabbonim consulted regarding the boycott?

  16. Moshe27
It was definitly an issue of CHILUL HASHEM.According to the Frum crowd, the ‘Jewish airline’, should not ‘Officially’ fly on Shabbos.
But on the other hand, as I mentioned earlier, its interesting that the SAME FRUM crowd are not bothered by the contreversial anti religious orginazation ON the aircraft itself like the mixed seating , showing movies , etc. etc.
This was more of an attempt to impress on the world , rather than to impress on ourselves!

  17. PS…For all of you out there who think the point here was to make Baal Teshuvas, your wrong!
It was an effort to keep El Al on the standards of our religion, thus enhancing
the diginity of the Frum. As was categorized on the blog ‘A WIN FOR SHMERAS SHABBOS’ AND THATS WHAT IT WAS…..A WIN!
