An Ethnically Divided Shabbos in One Bnei Brak Shul

daven2.jpgThe Three Weeks does not seem to have an impact on one Bnei Brak shul where Ashkenazim reportedly ousted Sephardim on Friday night. The shul is located in area Gimmel of the city, located in a library, an official minyan approved by city officials.

Sephardi mispallalim in the Beis Yaakov School shul explain police were summoned to oust them from the building. Kikar Shabbat reports that it has eyewitness testimony that the minyan of some 100 mispallalim was escorted out by police and city inspectors.

The shul is called Shiras Yosef, under the leadership of HaGaon HaRav Menashe Zilka and the president is listed as the rav of the community, HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Ben Shimon Shlita.

The Sephardi mispallalim explain they received permission for the minyan from Deputy Mayor Eli Dadon, but it appears the Beis Yaakov is uninterested. They add that have a permit to use the school for davening on Shabbos for a period of a number of months. They explain in recent weeks, the door was chained close and at times they could not access the light switches and air conditioning in the electric box, part of the ongoing harassment against them. The mispallalim report that this week was the record-breaker as the Beis Yaakov threw their stuff out into the hallway, including the Aaron Kodesh, and then calling police to evict them.

Despite the fact Rav Zilka showed police the permit he received from Dadon, who also holds the city’s education portfolio, police blocked the rav from entering the Beis Yaakov building.

The Beis Yaakov and City Hall were not available for comment.

  1. Interestingly enough, the one who is blamed in the story of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza is not the one who threw Bar Kamtza out of the party (we don’t even know his name and perhaps he had a good reason (see maharsha) but rather Kamtza who went to the authorities and told them about what had happened. (notice it says because of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza the Bais Hamikdash was destroyed

  2. Would someone please explain why Ashkenazim and Separdim cannot daven in the same shul.

My shul is divided 50/50 between A’s and S’s. The chazzans are Ashenazi and Sephardi, and the congregation reads from about 4 or 5 different siddurs, though all the chazzans – whether Ashkenazi or Sephardi – all use the same Siddur when leading the davening. The Kaddishes differ slightly, and everyone does Kaddish in his own tradition. What, if anything, are we doing wrong, and are we going to gehinom?

  3. To NFGo3

    In short, yes.

We bring down from chazal that someone who says “v’yatzmach purkanei v’korev mo’shichei in kaddushah during shachris on rosh hashanah while later saying a’viiineee m’alkineeee cha’nineee va’nineee later in the chazaras hashatz is definitely heading in that direction.

  4. nfgo3 – There are many Batei Knesset in Israel which daven like yours! Unfortunately though, I fear you will awaken the wrath of the dearest commenters on this site – who most likely will give you an endless diatribe about minhag and the importance of it.

  5. It was clear to me that you would not post my protest about this article. I only came back to check and confirm that you didn’t. It was not only this article but many others have shown that your judgement concerning the laws of Lashon Hara and Kibud Rabbunim is very lacking. I have nothing personal against you aside from the fact that you are repeat transgressors and the you and the rest of Yisroel (myself included) should come to our senses and this bitter Galus come to an end.
