Petach Tikva: FD attempting to extinguish large blaze

12:04PM EST: Firefighters from Petach Tikva, Herzliya, and Ramat Gan are battling a huge blaze that broke out in Petach Tikva’s industrial area. (No further info is available at A/T/T)

5:53PM EST: The blaze was finally brought under control after hours of fighting the fire.

Pomona: Residents Hear Plan for Rabbinical College

Organizers of the proposed Rabbinical College of Tartikov pledged to be “good neighbors” when meeting last night with Pomona residents, some of whom expressed concerns that they ultimately could be pushed out by an expanding ultra-Orthodox Jewish population. (more…)

Yeshiva University student to sue cops

A Brooklyn student is looking to put the hurt on the city after spending an agony-filled night in a precinct cell just one day after hernia surgery – minus his pain medication. Simon Weiss, 22, said cops ignored evidence of his surgery when they arrested him on May 9 for possession of two Vicodin pills. Not even a call from his Beth Israel Hospital doctor – a police surgeon – could free him. (more…)

The reason is that the shmita year starts in four months, and religious officials are rushing to promise financial and spiritual remuneration, and possibly a place in the world to come, if only farmers, religious and non-religious alike, agree to their proposals. North Miami Beach: Update on lack of police presence

After last Wednesday’s Rally, Councilman John Patrick  Julien asked that NMB’s next Council agenda include the proposition that the County hire the City of NMB to police the Donut Hole. He indicated that it is only logical that the City police that area since the City completely surrounds the Donut Hole and Miami-Dade County police need to drive through the City of NMB to get the Donut Hole. Councilman Julien said the County police lose precious time each time they go to the Donut Hole. (more…)

Polish court drops case against publisher of Hitler’s Mein Kampf

main kampf.jpgA criminal case of a publisher charged with breaking copyright laws for publishing Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” was dropped by a regional court on Tuesday in Poland. The Wroclaw regional court ruled that a publisher, broke copyright law by printing 3,000 copies of the Polish translation of Mein Kampf, in 2005, the PAP news agency reported. (more…)

Clothing company apologizes for selling Shatnez

suit.jpgThe Spanish clothing company Zara had to apologize to the Orthodox Jewish community in Eretz Yisroel after selling Shatnez in some of its suits. The Spanish press agency EFE reported that Zara, which is one of the most popular clothing brand in Israel, apologized for having carried out what is considered to be a serious Aveira (Shatnez) – mixing cotton and linen in the same piece of clothing. Brooklyn Yeshiva gets large AmeriCorps grant

Yeshiva Kehilath Yaakov, a Brooklyn based Yeshiva has received a $277,093 three-year grant from AmeriCorps for its mentoring program for at-risk youth.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton today welcomed the announcement that Yeshiva Kehilath Yaakov has received a $277,093 grant under the AmeriCorps State Competitive Award Program from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The grant will primarily be used to recruit members of Head Start to serve as mentors and role models for at-risk youth. (more…)

US Ambassador Jones Apologizes for Pollard remarks

pollard pic.jpgIt was widely reported yesterday that the the US ambassador to Israel said it is unlikely that convicted Pentagon spy Jonathan Pollard will ever be released, saying the fact that he has not been executed should be seen as an act of clemency by Washington.

The ambassador made an apology this morning which was made available to Yeshivaworld, It reads as follows: UA Ambassador to Israel Richard H. Jones has issued the following statement to the press:

“I apologize for the remarks I made this morning regarding the case of Mr. Jonathan Pollard, which were misinformed and misleading.  They did not reflect my personal views nor those of the Bush Administration.  I certainly do not personally believe that Mr. Pollard should have received capital punishment and I was appalled to learn that I had given that impression.  I regret any distress that I may have caused Mr. Pollard’s family and loved ones.”

Chareidi schools win Knesset today

The Knesset overwhelmingly passed into law on Monday the Nahari bill, which requires local authorities to contribute to the cost of running private educational institutions, in most cases ultra-Orthodox schools. The Local Authorities Council estimates the annual cost of the bill for municipal authorities at NIS 250 million. The approval of the bill is considered an important success for Shas, and is regarded as a the coalition’s gesture to the ultra-Orthodox party. All presidential candidates, Shimon Peres, Colette Avital and Rubi Rivlin, voted in favor. Likud and National Religious Party MKs abstained. (Haaretz)

Sderot: Woman killed by rocket attack

breaking news1.jpgBarzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon has reported that Shirel Feldman, 32, from Sderot has R”L died from a Kassam rocket attack which struck the car she was driving in. Another man was moderately wounded and another 12 suffer from shell shock.

Satmar Rebbe visits 5 Towns

s5t.jpgThis past Sunday, May 20, 2007,  the Satmar Rebbe Shlita from Kiryas Yoel graced the Five Towns and Far Rockaway with a visit – delivering a message that he intends to help in the rebuilding of the Bayswater Satmar Kehillah. The Rebbe started the day off at Yeshiva Darchei Torah where he delivered a drasha on Shavuos to the older bachurim of the yeshiva and to local residents. (more…)

The Idaho Anne Frank Memorial was vandalized in Downtown Boise Saturday night. Vandals toppled the bronze statue of the Jewish-German girl whose diary of her thoughts while hiding from the Nazis during World War Two has made her one of history’s most revered figures. (more…)

hst si.jpgOn Sunday, 3 Sivan, Mr. & Mrs. Harry Bram of Willowbrook, Staten Island, dedicated a Sefer Torah to the  Young Israel of Staten Island. The bochurim from Bais Medrash Nesivos Hatorah took part in the procession that went from Mr. Bram’s house to the Young Israel. Pictured here is the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Gershon Ribner, dancing with the Sefer Torah. Lively music was provided by Mr. Michael Septimus.

Hamas: We will wipe Israel off the map

hamas1.jpgA senior Hamas leader in Gaza declared on Monday that it was signed and sealed in his party that Israel would be wiped off the map and replaced by a Palestinian State. This statement comes on the heels of Israel’s retaliation to more than 140 rockets being fired at it’s citizens. The Israeli air-force has carried out dozens of air-strikes in the past few days killing scores of terrorists. The IDF is warning soldiers operating in and around Gaza to be alert as they suspect that Hamas will attempt kidnappings.

New Mexico Jews targeted by scammers

scam.jpgNew Mexico Attorney General Gary King’s office today issued a Scam Alert for what appears to be another of the so-called Nigerian Scams that have consistently plagued email in-boxes in New Mexico and the world. This newly reported scam entitled, “Save The Jews,” blatantly claims Jews in Nigeria and the West African region are being killed and asks for monetary donations to fight a resurgence of anti-Semitism. Yerushalayim / Manhattan: Real estate records broken

plaza hotel.jpgThe Israeli real-estate company Alrov sold an apartment in the Mamilla housing project in Yerushalayim for a record-breaking $9 million to a European citizen whose identity has not been disclosed. In New York, Israeli billionaire Yitzhak Tshuva, the owner of the Plaza Hotel sold an apartment in the hotel for more than $50 million – the highest price ever paid for an apartment in the city, the New York Daily News reported yesterday.
