Australia: Accused war criminal fails in court bid

(Wednesday, May 30th, 2007)

An accused Nazi war criminal has failed in a bid to avoid extradition proceedings while an appeal goes to the High Court.  Hungary wants to try Charles Zentai, 84, over allegations he tortured and murdered a Jewish teenager in Budapest while serving in the Hungarian army during the Nazi occupation in World War II.

Mr Zentai appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court today after an unsuccessful Federal Court of Australia challenge that had temporarily halted extradition proceedings which began in 2005.

Zentai has denied allegations that he murdered Peter Balazs, 18, which were brought against him by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, the Jewish human rights organisation.
