Israeli Ministry Alert: Moscow Vodka Poses a Health Hazard

vodThe Ministry of Finance has released an alert pertaining to “Moscow Vodka” produced in Beit Shemesh. It appears the treasury issued a health alert after the Israel Standards Institute analyzed the product and learned it contains 367 times the permitted quantity of methanol alcohol. The vodka is sold in 200cc rectangular glass bottles and the label displays a picture of the Kremlin.

The treasury in cooperation with the Health Ministry and tax officials, have begun random testing of locally manufactured vodkas sold in the Israeli marketplace.

  1. Methanol is a simpler form of alcohol than ethanol (the substance found in wine, beer and schnaps). Methanol is highly toxic for humans. As little as 10 mL of pure methanol, if swallowed, can break down into formic acid, which can cause permanent blindness by destruction of the optic nerve, and 30 mL is potentially fatal.

In the days of Prohibition in the 1920s in the US, bootleggers sold “bathtub gin” that sent customers blind.
