PLO Official: Israeli Settlement Law ‘Last Nail in Coffin’

abbasPalestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Tuesday that Israeli legislation to retroactively legalize thousands of settlement homes is an aggression against the Palestinian people.

“That bill is contrary to international law,” Abbas said following a meeting with French President Francois Hollande in Paris. “This is an aggression against our people that we will be opposing in international organizations”.

“What we want is peace… but what Israel does is to work toward one state based on apartheid,” Abbas said.

Hollande called on the Israeli government to go back on the bill approved by lawmakers late Monday, saying it would “pave the way for an annexation, de facto, of the occupied territories, which would be contrary to the two-state solution.”

Hours before Abbas’ meeting with Hollande, Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, told The Associated Press that the bill is “putting the last nail in the coffin of the two-state solution.”

The measure is the latest in a series of pro-settler steps taken by Israel’s hard-line government since the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president.

Calling the move “theft,” Erekat said it was “the Israeli government trying to legalize looting Palestinian land”.

In his joint statement with Hollande, Abbas also warned against moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, one of Trump’s campaign promises.

“Any move in that direction is an error and shouldn’t be done prior to an agreement on a political solution”, he said.

  1. Yada yada yada…. good as wondering when this totally unworkable two state solution was going to finally been knocked on the head.
Abbas! We’re not stealing land – we just using what is already ours. Only the minority left wing elite think you have any claim. Get use to it.

  2. For goodness sake.
The Palestinians dont want a two sate solution.
There aint no such thing as Palestinian land.
    Settlements are not illegal.

    Why isnt somebody shouting this.

  3. Arabs claiming “Palestinian Land” reminds me of this famous story:

The story is told about a European king of long ago who ruled over a populace that contained many Jews, and among them, a group of Karaites.

The king decided to hold a public debate between the Jews and the Karaites, to determine which of them was the authentic representative of Jewish tradition. The debate would be held in the palace chambers, between the local Rabbi and the leader of the Karaites.

As the debate was about to begin, the Rabbi and the Karaite entered the King’s royal chambers. The Rabbi entered in his bare feet, carrying his shoes in his hand.

Taking note of the Rabbi’s peculiar manner of arrival, the king questioned why he was carrying his shoes into the palace.

“You see, your Majesty,” the Rabbi explained, “we always guard our shoes very carefully in the presence of Karaites. Our tradition tells us that on the day that Moses stood at the burning bush and was told to remove his shoes, a Karaite came and stole them.”

“That’s a lie!” chortled the Karaite. “There were no Karaites back then!”

    “Exactly,” said the Rabbi.

And so the debate was settled.

  4. No Abbas! You are the one who put the last nail on the coffin by not renouncing terrorism , by activity or education of the future generations AND not recognizing Israel as the Jewish State. When you reverse those items , then a peace settlement can be discussed!
