Power Reduced To Some NYC Areas For Repairs Amid Heat Blast

(Monday, July 20th, 2015)

powerConsolidated Edison is reducing power to several New York City neighborhoods and asking residents to conserve electricity on one of the summer’s hottest days while the utility repairs cables.

Con Edison made the appeal Monday. It applies to 138,000 homes and businesses in the Richmond Hill, Woodhaven, Ozone Park, South Ozone Park, Kew Gardens Howard Beach and Broad Channel areas in Queens and the Lindenwood section of Brooklyn.

The utility says it has reduced voltage in those areas by 8 percent to protect equipment while fixing them. Customers generally wouldn’t see lights dim or appliances stop working.

But Con Ed is asking people to avoid using washers, dryers – even air-conditioners, if possible – until the problem’s resolved.

It’s not immediately known whether the problem is related to the heat.
