Austria: Jewish school attacker given light sentence

shattered glass.jpgAn Austrian court has sentenced a Croatian man to 15 months in jail for smashing a Jewish school with a crowbar last year. The man told the court “there are too many Jews in this country” and justice officials said his failure to show any remorse contributed to the sentence.

But Vienna-based Israelite Cultural Community criticised the 15-month jail sentence as “totally inappropriate and inexplicable”, noting the man’s defiance and the fact he could have received up to five years in jail.

  1. Why is anybody surprised at the Austrian government not punishing an anti-semite enough? Throughout Western and Eastern Europe traditional anti-semitism is resurfacing. Did anybody really think that only 60 years after the war the political cultures of these nations would change so dramatically? Does any Jew really see this as “inexplicable” ?
