I just received my Absentee Ballot for this years primary election. I had initially planned on voting for Chaim Deustch but I’m wondering whether that’s really the best use of my vote. His election strategy was to bring 30,000 voters from the Jewish, Russian and disaffected black communities. Post Covid I think that’s an extremely heavy lift. Many of our voters are above 65 who might not vote at all, attracting black voters will probably be even more difficult now, and I haven’t really seen must GOTV effort from Deustch. He’s also barely raised money,
However bad Yvette is we can do much worse with her other opponent, and the progressives feel very emboldened in the AOC era.
I am asking this in all seriousness, I would really like to hear the opinions of other residents of NY9.
(please i’m not interested in hearing about how can anyone vote for a dem or someone who voted for bill xy&z)What’s the likelihood of anyone other than the incumbent or Deutsch winning the primary? Very unlikely?
I see little value of voting in a frum person as Democrat member of Congress. However idealistic he may be, he will soon learn that he will have to agree with the Dem platform if he wants good committee assignments and help in re-election. Frankly, given today’s Dem party, I would be hardpressed to vote for any Democrat for any position. The party is moving ever farther to the left. I don’t understand why so many Jews still belong to that party

Although the OP didnt want to turn the thread into this, let me just say quickly that I think you are wrong. Congress hardly ever votes on social issues. Even if yes, there are four Democrats who are still anti abortion. On other social isssues Deutsch may even agree IDK (2nd amendment etc, Justice in Policing Act). Fiscally, he probably is just as liberal as the other Democrats (i could see him voting for the HEROES Act). Foreign Policy 95% of Democrats are old school. 59 out of 62 freshman democrats voted against BDS in 2019. Politics in many ways is still regional and if youre from NY you’rw going to agree qith 90% of your regional congressmen no mattter what you call yourself (i.e. repealing the SALT cap, pro immigration etc.)Shnitzel: NY Democrats will lynch and expel any NY member of Congress who doesn’t clearly support abortion on demand. Just look at what the Democrats just did to Mark Yechiel Kalish in Chicago.
Fiscally, if he opposes funding of abortion or toeiva groups or toeiva “rights”, parades, cross gender restrooms, etc, when these issues come to vote in Congress, he’ll lose party support in the following primary.
And repealing SALT was the correct thing to do. It is also proper policy to crack down on illegal immigration.
Eliminating the state and local tax deduction would be the best outcome.

I think the OP should check his spelling. I also think he’s mistaken when he says older people won’t vote because of COVID. Every voter was mailed an application for a mail-in ballot.
Yvette Clarke has been an invisible Member of Congress during most of her time serving. Her claim to fame is her statement on a late night TV show that slavery ended in Brooklyn in the 1880’s.
Chaim Deustch is a sincere man who started Flatbush Shomrim years ago, worked for elected officials and is presently serving in City Council. We could do much worse than Chaim. If the community actually votes he has a good chjasnce of winning.
If elected the contest for his City Council seat will be interesting.
Deutsch’s problem is a) a lot of frum people are registered Republicans, and thus cannot vote for him in the Democrat primary and b) even if every frum registered voter was a registered Democrat, the Congressional district is majority black, with the frum community representing probably less than 20% of the district population.
In fact, unfortunately for the frum community, the frum neighborhoods are cut down the middle and split between Congressman Jerold Nadler’s district and Congresswoman Yvette Clarke’s district, hence splitting the community in two different Congressional districts.
I’m an enthusiastic Trump supporter, and will vote for Trump this year. I’m registered Independent so I can vote in either primary.
I think it actually makes sense for us to elect frum Democratic candidates, particularly in Democratic districts. How did the horrible Ilhan Omar and horrible Rashida Tlaib get elected without any experience? They ran unopposed, in districts that are completely Democrat. The Democratic party wanted to showcase “Diversity” by electing Muslim females, regardless of who they were and whether they were qualified for the job.
We need more frum Jews in Congress. We need to run them in areas where they can easily win, unopposed. Especially in the Democrat party, because we need to shift them away from their ridiculous Progressive nonsense.
sifsei: The Democrats want to split the frum vote into multiple districts, in order to dilute it, since they know we vote conservative and frequently Republican. And no New York Democrat congressman will want a strong right-wing voter base in his district. So he’ll work behind the scenes in Albany to insure that the frum vote is split into multiple districts.
Just as they’ve done after the previous census based redistricting in 2010, 2000, 1990, etc.
Joseph, Deutsch has a good chance because the leftist vote will be split between Clarke and her challengers from the left, who think she’s not leftist enough.
bsharg2, if you are not registered as a Democrat you CAN NOT vote in the Democrat primary. And it’s too late to change your registration. The deadline for that was Feb 14. (It used to be in the previous October, but they recently changed the law to move it to February.)
Noach Dear once ran in the Democrat primary for this same Congressional seat, after he was term limited from the city council (much as Deutsch is now) hoping to win on a split vote. I think another frum candidate also did a few years after Dear.

Most modern orthodox areas vote for liberal Democrats, although not for leftists.
Speaking of liberal Democrats, please help support Congressman Eliot Engel, who is facing a primary challenge from an anti-Israel leftist who has a humongous amount of campaign cash.

Actually they were NOT unopposed. Omar won a five way primary with 48.5% of the vote; one of her opponents was a former Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. The Republicans were stupid enough to nominate a Trumpie to run against her in the general election and Omar won with 78% of the vote. The seat isn’t gerrymandered; Minneapolis has long been friendly to politicians on the left.
Tlaib won her primary with 31.2% of the vote. Second place went to Brenda Jones, President of the Detroit City Council, with 30.2% of the vote. Republicans had gerrymandered the district to pack as many African American Democrats into one district as possible so that they would not vote out Republicans. Tlaib snuck in because the African American politicians could not agree on one candidate. Jones actually won the special election the same day for the same seat and served in Congress for a few weeks. The Republicans screwed up and failed to get a candidate on the ballot at all; Tlaib won the general election with 84% of the vote against minor party and write in candidates. The gerrymander failed, as happens in wave elections such as 2018 where Democrats swept every statewide race and flipped two suburban seats.
sifsei: The wishes of the incumbent Democrat congressmen holds much more sway in Albany during redistricting than the wishes of the frum community. And since none of the Democrat congressmen want much of the Orthodox Jewish electorate in their district, due to our conservatism and opposition to liberal Democrat positions, they each want as little of us as possible (to avoid giving any future opposition candidates a base to build upon), resulting in the Orthodox Jewish voter base being split into different Congressional districts.

What is your issue with ANTIFA, you miss the concerts?I am not a big supporter of Deuich but he has been there for our community in our time of need. It cost nothing to vote for him and it will send a strong message yo Deblassio and the democratic party that we are not a lap dog that is happy with a few scraps.
Hopefully he’ll make it to the November ballot for the general election, so I can vote for him in one of those very rare occasions that I’d vote for a Democrat.
With 80% of the vote counted, Yvette Clarke has 60.8% of the vote. Bunkeddeko has 19.1%. Chaim is in third place with 9.8% of the vote.
“This is a complete failure for the Jewish community. Why are Jews so self defeating?” Almost 50% OF this district is African American. Do you really think there are that many more registered frum voters that didnt vote? Or just another person who doesn’t know the boundaries of the 9th district and its demographics?
With absentee ballots Chaim will have gotten a bit more of the vote than the percent of this Congressional District that are frum Jews. The frum are about 15% of the district. But since 75% of the frum are not registered Democrats (most are Republicans and others are independents), they can’t vote in the primary.
It was completely misleading when I was told that this was a tight race. The demographics indeed make a difference. Do frum candidates try to engage the non-Jewish members or do they just hope and pray they can get enough frum and otherwise Jewish people to vote for them?
and for the record, I live in Midwood and I NEVER saw Deutsch during this campaign. I saw signs with his picture, but never in person.
